The July festival for the co-patron saint of Mazara del Vallo

The Madonna del Paradiso Festival is the most beloved religious celebration in Mazara del Vallo, a city on the western coast of Sicily, in the province of Trapani. At the heart of this devotion is an 18th-century painting, attributed to the Neapolitan artist Sebastiano Conca, depicting the Immaculate Virgin dressed in white and blue, her head crowned with twelve stars and her eyes turned toward the sky. According to tradition, on the night of November 3, 1797, around 9:00 PM, the image moved its eyes before the faithful gathered in the Casa del Paradiso: from that miracle, a profound cult was born that has lasted for over two centuries.
The Madonna del Paradiso is venerated as the patron of the Diocese of Mazara del Vallo and co-patron of the city. The church dedicated to her was opened to the public in 1808 and elevated to a Sanctuary in 1978. The Madonna del Paradiso district, surrounding the sanctuary, still maintains the closest bond with this popular devotion, which is also deeply rooted in the local fishing community.
The highlight of the celebrations takes place in July, around the Coronation Festival, which traditionally falls on the first Wednesday after the first Sunday of the month. The festival opens with the evocative Descent of the Madonna: the sacred image leaves the Sanctuary and is carried in a solemn procession to the Cathedral Basilica of the Most Holy Savior, the heart of the historic center. During its stay at the Cathedral, solemn masses, novenas, and a series of devotional processions take place, traversing the various parishes and neighborhoods of the city before the image returns to the Sanctuary.
In addition to the summer festival, the local devotion also commemorates the 1797 miracle with the November octave (from November 3rd to 11th), linked to the anniversary of the day the Madonna "moved her eyes." However, the July cycle remains the most solemn and well-attended, uniting the faith, tradition, and identity of Mazara del Vallo.
The 2026 Madonna del Paradiso Festival will take place in Mazara del Vallo, in the province of Trapani, following the usual summer schedule: the Descent of the sacred image from the Sanctuary to the Cathedral Basilica of the Most Holy Savior, the Coronation Festival, and the devotional processions in the historic center. The exact dates and the 2026 program have not yet been published; they will be communicated by the Diocese and the parish closer to the event. It is recommended to check the official channels of the Diocese of Mazara del Vallo for the updated calendar.
The celebrations take place in the historic center of Mazara del Vallo (province of Trapani), between the Maria SS. del Paradiso Sanctuary and the Cathedral Basilica of the Most Holy Savior.
