About Festino di San Vito

The Festino di San Vito is the most significant patronal festival in Mazara del Vallo, located in the heart of the Trapani coast in Sicily. For one week in August, the city honors Saint Vitus the Martyr, its illustrious son and protector, with a tradition dating back to 1728. Featuring nocturnal torchlight processions, a captivating historical pageant with living tableaux depicting the Saint's life, and the symbolic sea voyage led by the local fishing community, the Festino unites popular devotion, art, and civic pride in an event born from the heart of Mazara.

The Festino di San Vito, the soul of Mazara del Vallo

The Festino di San Vito is the most deeply felt religious and popular event in Mazara del Vallo, a maritime city in the province of Trapani, on the western tip of Sicily. Every year, during the penultimate week of August, the entire community gathers around its patron saint, Saint Vitus the Martyr, in a celebration that weaves together centuries-old faith, spectacle, and local identity. While the Saint's liturgical feast falls on June 15th, the grand festivities in Mazara take place in August to commemorate the translation of his relics.

Saint Vitus, son of Mazara

According to ancient tradition, Saint Vitus was born in Mazara to Hila, a pagan nobleman, but was raised by his nurse Crescentia and educated by his tutor Modestus, both of whom were Christians. Even as a child, he was known for his fervent faith, which led to his martyrdom in Lucania on June 15, 303, during the persecution of Diocletian, alongside Modestus and Crescentia. Because of this bond, the Saint is venerated as the patron of the city and the entire Diocese of Mazara. The origins of the Festino date back to 1728.

A week of rituals and art

The Festino begins with the ringing of the sacred bells of the Cathedral Basilica of the Most Holy Savior, accompanied by a baroque historical pageant and a floral tribute to the Saint. The following days feature the most anticipated moments of the festival:

  • The Patron Saint's Torchlight Procession: At night, the statue is placed on a triumphal chariot and pulled by the fishermen of Mazara in what is considered one of Italy's earliest morning processions, moving from the Cathedral toward the church of San Vito by the sea.
  • The Historical Pageant of Living Tableaux: Hundreds of performers, dancers, singers, and musicians re-enact the life of the Martyr Saint and key moments in the city's history, including the famous choreographic re-enactment of the "flight of Saint Vitus" by boat with Modestus, Crescentia, and the Angel.
  • The White Night, featuring the extraordinary opening of basilicas and churches in the historic center and a costume exhibition at the Episcopal Seminary.
  • The solemn final procession and the boarding of the statue, concluding with the casting of a laurel wreath into the sea in memory of lost sailors.

Faith, sea, and community

Above all, the Festino tells the story of the deep bond between Mazara and the sea. The Mazara fishing fleet, one of the most important in the Mediterranean, is the absolute protagonist of the festival: it is the fishermen who carry the Saint's chariot, and it is to the sea that the final act of remembrance for those who did not return is directed. Surrounding the religious celebrations, the historic center comes alive with shows, music, and cultural initiatives, making the Festino an event that involves citizens, returning emigrants, and visitors from all over western Sicily.

Mazara del Vallo, a city of encounters

Visiting Mazara during the Festino means discovering one of Sicily's most fascinating cities: its labyrinthine alleys of the Casbah, a legacy of Arab rule, the splendid Norman Cathedral, and the famous Dancing Satyr housed in the city museum. A destination where history, faith, and maritime tradition merge under the sign of Saint Vitus.

Festino di San Vito — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Festino di San Vito will be held in Mazara del Vallo from August 16 to 23, themed "A Path of Peace in the History of the City of Mazara." The project, approved by the Municipal Council in coordination with the Diocese, structures the festival around three dimensions: peace as a conscious choice, the history of Mazara as a city of encounters, and the meaning of the journey as a pilgrimage and procession. The detailed day-by-day program will be published in the weeks leading up to the festival.

The Festino di San Vito 2026 will enliven the historic center of Mazara del Vallo from August 16 to 23. The edition is titled "A Path of Peace in the History of the City of Mazara", in harmony with the theme chosen by the Church for 2026, and revolves around three pillars: peace as a conscious and disarmed choice, the vocation of Mazara as a city of encounters between peoples and cultures, and the value of the journey as a pilgrimage and procession. The event is promoted by the Municipality of Mazara del Vallo together with the Diocese. As per tradition, the torchlight procession with the Saint's chariot pulled by fishermen, the historical pageant with living tableaux, and the solemn procession with the boarding of the statue at sea are expected. The detailed calendar of events will be announced on the official channels of the Municipality and the Diocese.
