About Most Holy Crucifix Feast

Every year in mid-September, the island of Favignana celebrates its patron saint, the Most Holy Crucifix, with a festival rooted in the 15th century. From pilgrimages to Monte Santa Caterina and the ancient 'Alborata' at Molo San Leonardo to the solemn procession through the town streets, the entire Egadi Islands community gathers for a moment of deep devotion, accompanied by brass bands, performances in Piazza Matrice, and traditional fireworks over the sea.

The Patron Saint of Favignana

The Patronal Feast of the Most Holy Crucifix is the most cherished religious and cultural event on the island of Favignana, located in the heart of the Egadi Islands archipelago, in the province of Trapani. Every year in mid-September, the entire community of the Municipality of Favignana and Egadi Islands unites around the statue of the Crucifix, venerated as the island's patron, in a celebration that weaves together centuries-old faith, maritime identity, and local Egadi traditions.

15th-Century Origins

Devotion to the Most Holy Crucifix dates back to the early 15th century. Legend has it that a deaf-mute man discovered an image of Christ on the Cross carved into tufaโ€”the limestone rock that has shaped the island's architecture for centuriesโ€”inside a cave near the old cemetery. This discovery, considered miraculous, sparked a lasting veneration. In the 19th century, a Trapani goldsmith crafted a wooden cross reproducing the original image; the statue gained further significance during the 1837 cholera epidemic, when islanders carried it to the main church to seek protection. Once the outbreak ended, the Crucifix remained there permanently.

Festival Rituals

The festivities span several days, alternating moments of intense religious observance with cultural and entertainment events. Key highlights include:

  • The pilgrimage to the Three Crosses on Monte Santa Caterina, the peak overlooking the island, a traditional devotional climb for the faithful.
  • The Alborata at dawn at Molo San Leonardo, an ancient ritual marking the start of the solemn day, accompanied by a brass band parade through the town.
  • The solemn procession of the Most Holy Crucifix, which leaves the Chiesa Matrice in Piazza Matrice and winds through the town center, followed by a crowd of devotees.
  • Fireworks over the sea, traditionally viewed from the Praia beach, facing the harbor.

Entertainment and Culture

Beyond the religious dimension, the festival offers a rich program of events in Piazza Matrice and across the island's squares: concerts, folk group performances, popular singing, literary reviews dedicated to island voices, podcasts, and guest entertainers. The grand finale features an annual evening concert that brings together residents and visitors from the mainland and other islands.

An Egadi Identity

More than just a religious anniversary, the Feast of the Most Holy Crucifix is a defining moment for the Egadi community: an occasion where generations come together to renew their faith and connection to their land, set against a backdrop of sea and tufa that tells centuries of Favignana's history.
