The Patronal Feast of the Most Holy Crucifix is the most cherished religious and cultural event on the island of Favignana, located in the heart of the Egadi Islands archipelago, in the province of Trapani. Every year in mid-September, the entire community of the Municipality of Favignana and Egadi Islands unites around the statue of the Crucifix, venerated as the island's patron, in a celebration that weaves together centuries-old faith, maritime identity, and local Egadi traditions.
Devotion to the Most Holy Crucifix dates back to the early 15th century. Legend has it that a deaf-mute man discovered an image of Christ on the Cross carved into tufaโthe limestone rock that has shaped the island's architecture for centuriesโinside a cave near the old cemetery. This discovery, considered miraculous, sparked a lasting veneration. In the 19th century, a Trapani goldsmith crafted a wooden cross reproducing the original image; the statue gained further significance during the 1837 cholera epidemic, when islanders carried it to the main church to seek protection. Once the outbreak ended, the Crucifix remained there permanently.
The festivities span several days, alternating moments of intense religious observance with cultural and entertainment events. Key highlights include:
Beyond the religious dimension, the festival offers a rich program of events in Piazza Matrice and across the island's squares: concerts, folk group performances, popular singing, literary reviews dedicated to island voices, podcasts, and guest entertainers. The grand finale features an annual evening concert that brings together residents and visitors from the mainland and other islands.
More than just a religious anniversary, the Feast of the Most Holy Crucifix is a defining moment for the Egadi community: an occasion where generations come together to renew their faith and connection to their land, set against a backdrop of sea and tufa that tells centuries of Favignana's history.
The 2026 edition of the Most Holy Crucifix Feast in Favignana does not yet have an official program. Following tradition, the festivities in honor of the Patron Saint are expected to take place in mid-September, culminating on September 14th. The detailed calendar will be released by the Municipality of Favignana and Egadi Islands in the weeks leading up to the event.
Favignana is accessible via Liberty Lines and Siremar ferries and hydrofoils departing from the port of Trapani (approx. 30-40 minutes) and, seasonally, from Marsala. Trapani has an airport (Trapani-Birgi) and is well-connected by rail and road. On the island, transport is primarily on foot, by bicycle, or via electric vehicles.
Festivities take place in the island center, between the Chiesa Matrice and Piazza Matrice, with the main solemn day traditionally held on September 14th. Admission to all religious events and public performances is free.
September coincides with the tail end of the tourist season; booking ferries and accommodation in advance is highly recommended. Wear comfortable clothing for the pilgrimage to Monte Santa Caterina.
