The rowing challenge between the districts of Misiliscemi on the shores of Marausa
The Contrade Regatta is a summer highlight that brings the coastline of Marausa, in the municipality of Misiliscemi (Trapani province), to life. Boats representing the various local districts face off in a rowing challenge in front of the Molo Parrini, turning a morning by the sea into an occasion for local pride and popular celebration. More than just a sporting competition, the regatta is a ritual of belonging: each district brings its own colors, supporters, and friendly rivalry to the water, cementing the sense of community in a young municipality deeply rooted in its traditions.
Misiliscemi is one of Sicily's newest municipalities, established in 2021 after separating from Trapani. Its territory stretches across hills, countryside, and sea, encompassing eight historic districts: Fontanasalsa, Guarrato, Locogrande, Marausa, Palma, Pietretagliate, Rilievo, and Salinagrande. This diverse identity, made up of villages and hamlets, gives meaning to a regatta that pits the districts against each other, celebrating a bond with the sea as ancient as the maritime and agricultural vocation of this part of the Trapani province.
The race takes place in Marausa, the municipality's coastal hamlet, known for its long golden sand beach facing the Egadi Islands and a small fishing port with its characteristic stone pier. The coastline also features the 16th-century Torre di Mezzo, an ancient coastal watchtower. The strong winds make this stretch of coast a favorite for water sports enthusiasts, while during migratory seasons, it is not uncommon to spot pink flamingos in the nearby salt pans.
The Contrade Regatta is part of the "Sere d'Estate" (Summer Evenings) program, a series of events promoted by the Municipality of Misiliscemi during the warmer months, featuring music, books, sports, performances, theater, and gastronomy spread across the districts and the Marausa coast. The regatta represents one of the signature events of the festival, successfully blending sports with a lively village celebration.
Between oars, colors, and cheering crowds, the Contrade Regatta is the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic corner of western Sicily, where passion for the sea becomes a collective identity and a shared celebration.
The 2026 Contrade Regatta will be held on August 8, 2026, on the sea of Marausa, in front of the Molo Parrini, in the municipality of Misiliscemi. As per tradition, the local districts will compete for victory in a rowing challenge that draws residents and visitors to the Trapani coast. The event, with free admission, is part of the "Sere d'Estate" summer festival promoted by the municipality. The detailed program will be released by the municipal administration in the weeks leading up to the event.
Marausa is located along the coast of the municipality of Misiliscemi, just a few kilometers from Trapani and the Trapani-Birgi airport. By car, it can be reached via the coastal provincial road; during the summer, the municipality operates a shuttle bus service connecting the districts to Marausa Lido.
Access to the event is free.
We recommend bringing a hat, water, and sunscreen: the event takes place in direct sunlight on the pier and beach. Take advantage of the day to relax on the beach of Marausa and visit the Torre di Mezzo.
