Handmade gnocchi from an ancient local recipe, held in Piazza Torrione, Rocca d'Evandro

The Roccavandro Gnocchi Festival is the most anticipated summer event in Rocca d'Evandro, a small town in the Province of Caserta, on the northern border of Campania. Organized by the Pro Loco Rocca d'Evandro APS, the event has been held for nearly half a century; 2025 marked its 47th edition, celebrated alongside the 50th anniversary of the Pro Loco, which was founded in 1975.
It is more than just a culinary evening; it is a community celebration that attracts visitors from across the Upper Caserta region and lower Lazio, just a few kilometers from Cassino and the regional border. Organizers aptly describe it as a true celebration of the local territory.
The dish that gives the festival its name is prepared according to an ancient recipe passed down through generations by local housewives: handmade gnocchi served with a traditional local sauce. The focus on high-quality ingredients is the hallmark of the event, reaffirmed each year by the volunteers working in the kitchen.
The festival takes place in the historic center, specifically in Piazza Torrione, featuring stone architecture, illuminated alleys, and a panoramic view of the Terra Sancti Benedicti, the land of Saint Benedict stretching toward Montecassino. It is one of the most evocative settings for a Caserta food festival, with outdoor tables and views opening up over the Garigliano Valley.
Beyond the dining, there is always room for live music and dancing. In 2025, the evening featured the Fratelli Scacchia, world champions of the organetto, followed by a DJ set by Fabrizio Secondino dedicated to the 80s and 90s. The 2023 edition featured the MBL Musicisti Basso Lazio. There is always a dedicated area for children with entertainment, traditional wooden games, and mascots, managed in 2025 by SG Butterfly.
In March 2026, at the Sala Koch of the Senate of the Republic in Rome, the Roccavandro Gnocchi Festival received the national "Quality Festival" (Sagra di Qualità) mark awarded by UNPLI, the National Union of Pro Loco of Italy. This recognition honors events that successfully promote local traditions, gastronomic heritage, and cultural identity. A delegation from the municipal administration and the Pro Loco traveled to Rome to accept the award, a milestone seen locally as confirmation of the successful collaboration between institutions, associations, and volunteers.
The town has just under three thousand inhabitants and is nestled on a hill at the foot of Monte Camino, dominated by an early medieval castle acquired by the municipality in 1980. A frontier land between Campania and Lazio, Rocca d'Evandro was crossed by the Gustav Line during World War II, a sacrifice that earned the town the Silver Medal for Civil Merit in 2004. The municipal territory includes several hamlets, from Bivio Mortola to Camino, Cocuruzzo, and Vallevona, and preserves traces of a Roman-era river port in Mortola.
As of the update of this page, the Pro Loco has not yet released the calendar for the 2026 edition. In recent years, the event has fallen on a Sunday evening in early August. It is recommended to follow the official channels of the Pro Loco Rocca d'Evandro APS, which publishes the event poster a few weeks before the evening.
No official date for the Roccavandro Gnocchi Festival has been published for 2026. The event, organized by the Pro Loco Rocca d'Evandro APS in the historic center of the Caserta municipality, took place in 2025 on Sunday, August 3rd, in Piazza Torrione; the reference period remains early August.
In March 2026, at the Sala Koch of the Senate of the Republic, the festival received the national UNPLI "Quality Festival" (Sagra di Qualità) mark, a recognition reserved for events that promote local traditions, gastronomic heritage, and cultural identity. This is a clear signal that the event is active and supported by both the Pro Loco and the municipal administration.
For the final date and program, it is best to follow the official channels of the Pro Loco Rocca d'Evandro APS, which releases the event poster a few weeks before the evening.
Rocca d'Evandro can be reached by car via the A1 Rome-Naples motorway and the SS430 state road of the Liri Valley. The area is also served by the Rome-Cassino-Naples railway line. The festival takes place in the historic center, in Piazza Torrione. In past editions, free parking and a shuttle service from Bivio Mortola to the village were provided, a recommended solution given the narrow streets of the center.
The event is a one-night affair. In 2025, it opened at 7:00 PM and closed around 11:00 PM. Tastings are available at stands managed by Pro Loco volunteers.
The village is made of stone and is uphill; comfortable shoes are recommended. August evenings on the hill can be cool after sunset. It is useful to arrive early to find a seat at the tables in the square, which are highly sought after for the panoramic view of the Garigliano Valley.
