The ancient village of Coreno Ausonio comes alive with local flavors, traditional bagpipers, and festive Christmas spirit

«Flavors and History of the Village» is the Christmas festival that, in late December, breathes new life into the stone streets of the Rione Curthi, the oldest core of Coreno Ausonio, a town in the province of Frosinone in southern Lazio. For one evening, the alleys of the historic center transform into a sprawling itinerary where the region's rich history and culture intertwine with the scents and flavors of local tradition.
The event was created to celebrate the town's identity and share its roots. According to tradition, the name «Coreno» has ancient origins linked to wine, and the territory is associated with the memory of Caecubum, one of the most celebrated wines in ancient Rome. Walking through the Curthi means retracing the winemaking and farming vocation of this land, from its medieval settlement in the upper part of the town to the customs that still define the community's life today.
The heart of the festival is the food and wine trail set up along the alleys: the cellars and corners of the village open their doors to offer tastings of traditional dishes, genuine local products, and regional wines. Walking from stop to stop, visitors discover the popular cuisine of Coreno in a scenic setting made of stone, lights, and ancient portals.
The stroll is accompanied by live shows, street artists, theatrical performances, and entertainment dedicated to children. The most authentic touch of the Christmas season comes from the zampognari (traditional bagpipers), whose ancient melodies resonate through the alleys of the Rione Curthi, guiding visitors with notes steeped in history and memory.
«Flavors and History of the Village» is organized by the Municipality of Coreno Ausonio together with the Pro Loco of Coreno Ausonio APS, involving citizens, volunteers, and local businesses. Included in the «Christmas in Coreno» program, the festival has quickly become a defining event for the town and a compelling reason to visit one of the most charming villages in southern Lazio during the holidays.
The 2026 edition of «Flavors and History of the Village» has not yet been officially announced. Based on the calendar of previous editions, the event is expected in Coreno Ausonio during the Christmas period, towards the end of December, among the stone alleys of the Rione Curthi.
The exact date and detailed program will be communicated by the Municipality of Coreno Ausonio and the Pro Loco of Coreno Ausonio APS on their official channels. Check back for updates.
Coreno Ausonio is located in the province of Frosinone, in southern Lazio, between the Liri Valley and the Gulf of Gaeta. By car, it can be reached from the A1 motorway (Cassino or Pontecorvo exits) or from the Cassino-Formia highway, continuing along the provincial roads to the town center.
The event takes place during the Christmas season, in late December, in the late afternoon and evening.
Access to the village trail is free; tastings of local products along the route are provided by the individual stands and cellars. In previous editions, a free shuttle service was provided to reach the historic center.
