About Pietravairano City of the Nativity

In the quiet days between Christmas and Epiphany, the historic village of Pietravairano, in the province of Caserta, transforms into the Bethlehem of the year zero. Along a 1.5-kilometer route through alleys, underpasses, cellars, and noble palaces, up to 84 animated scenes and 250 performers bring to life ancient arts and crafts, taverns, Roman prisons, Herod's court, and the Magi's procession, leading to the Nativity grotto. Established in 2003, it is one of the longest-running and most renowned living nativity scenes in the Alto Casertano region.

An entire village becomes Bethlehem

In the days between Christmas and Epiphany, the historic center of Pietravairano — a small town in the Alto Casertano, in the province of Caserta (Campania), nestled at the foot of Mount Caievola — sheds its medieval skin to become the Bethlehem of the year zero. The Pietravairano Living Nativity is one of the most long-standing and well-known sacred representations in the region: the idea was born in 2003 from the founding members of the Pietravairano Città Presepe Onlus association, and since then, the event has been renewed, usually every two years, now exceeding its tenth edition.

A 1.5-kilometer route with 84 scenes

The path that welcomes spectators winds for about a kilometer and a half in the upper part of the town, along Via Federico Altieri and the surrounding narrow streets. In recent editions, up to 84 animated scenes have been set up with about 250 performers: alleys, underpasses, cellars, small squares, and noble palaces are opened and redecorated as old workshops, prisons, ancient homes, and taverns, where local residents stage the arts and crafts of the past.

The visit is guided: you traverse the reborn city scene after scene, arriving at a small loggia where the Nativity grotto is reconstructed. Lights, scents, and sounds change at every corner, recreating the atmosphere of a Palestinian village from two thousand years ago, yet set within the authentic stones of a Southern Italian village.

The public's favorite scenes

  • The prisons, where Roman soldiers demonstrate the torture inflicted on prisoners: for years, this has been the scene that strikes visitors the most;
  • Herod's court, one of the most spectacular settings along the entire route;
  • The fisherman and scenes of daily life, featuring shepherds, artisans, merchants, and travelers;
  • The Magi's procession, which closes the narrative on the evenings of Epiphany;
  • The ancient craft workshops, animated primarily by the town's elderly, who pass down the gestures and words of a bygone era.

A community project, not just a show

The Living Nativity was also born as a response to the depopulation of the historic center: for a few evenings a year, empty houses light up again, cellars reopen, and the village comes back to life. The organizing committee, led by Maria De Ninno, involves dozens of families, and by tradition, the role of the Holy Family is entrusted to the parents of the last child born in the town: a detail that speaks volumes about the spirit behind the event.

From the first edition to today, the nativity has welcomed over 60,000 visitors from all over the province of Caserta, nearby Molise, and southern Lazio, contributing to the awareness of the customs, traditions, and heritage of Pietravairano and its surroundings.

Flavors of the Alto Casertano along the way

The culinary aspect is an integral part of the experience. Before entering the nativity, various stands are set up with local products, while along the route, taverns offer dishes and desserts prepared according to traditional recipes. In recent editions, the entrance ticket already included the tasting of several local specialties.

When and how to visit

Recent editions have taken place over four evenings — December 26th and 27th, then January 5th and 6th — with fixed hours from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM. The town provides parking in the lower part and a shuttle service that takes spectators to the entrance of the route in the upper part of the village. As this is a biennial event, it is always advisable to check the dates on the association's channels before planning your trip.

Pietravairano beyond the nativity

The town of Pietravairano is worth a visit even outside the Christmas season: on the summit of Mount San Nicola lies the famous Italic Theater-Temple, one of the most evocative archaeological complexes in Campania, reachable via a scenic walk. In the village of San Felice, in the upper hamlet, the community also stages the Living Passion during the Easter period: a second event that confirms Pietravairano's vocation for open-air popular theater.
