About San Vittore Christmas Tree

Every December 8th, San Vittore del Lazio, in the province of Frosinone, lights up Monte Sammucro with a Christmas tree certified by the Guinness World Records in 2002 as the world's largest. It is a luminous outline over 600 meters long, created with kilometers of cables and hundreds of colored bulbs on the mountain's rocky face, visible even from the Autostrada del Sole. The tree remains lit until January 6th, while the town celebrates the Feast of the Immaculate Conception with Christmas markets in Piazza Municipio, concerts, and children's entertainment.

A giant of light on Monte Sammucro

As evening falls on December 8th, the rocky face of Monte Sammucro transforms into an immense Christmas tree made of light. In San Vittore del Lazio, a small village in the province of Frosinone on the border between Lazio, Campania, and Molise, the luminous outline stretches for over 600 meters across approximately 122,000 square meters of mountainside, supported by thousands of meters of electric cables and hundreds of colored bulbs. The result is a spectacle visible from kilometers away: those traveling along the Autostrada del Sole between Cassino and Caianello can see it shining above the Valle dei Santi throughout the holiday season.

From Guinness World Records to the return of tradition

In 2002, the San Vittore del Lazio tree entered the Guinness World Records as the world's largest Christmas tree, a title contested with the famous tree in Gubbio. In 2005, it also received the E.I.P. "Peace and Environment" award as a symbol of peace and brotherhood. After years of hiatus—the tree had remained dark since 2009—the tradition has been revived: the 2022 relighting, after fourteen years of darkness, moved the entire community, and since 2024, the event has resumed regularly every December 8th, the day of the Immaculate Conception.

The lighting ceremony on December 8th

The ceremony takes place in the evening on the churchyard of the Church of Santa Maria della Rosa in the historic center. In the presence of local civil, military, and religious authorities, a button is pressed to trigger the lighting: in an instant, the mountain illuminates to the sound of applause. The tree then remains lit every evening until January 6th, accompanying the entire holiday period, from Christmas to Epiphany.

Christmas Markets in Piazza Municipio

The day of the lighting is a true village festival. From the morning, Piazza Municipio hosts Christmas markets with stalls featuring local gastronomy, handicrafts, painting, sculpture, and nativity scenes. The program also includes:

  • children's entertainment and the arrival of Santa Claus;
  • Christmas music concerts in the historic center;
  • photographic exhibitions dedicated to the history of the tree and the work of the volunteers;
  • tastings of typical products from the Ciociaria region and the Valle dei Santi.

The San Vittore Tree-Builders

Behind this marvel is the work of the Associazione Alberisti Sanvittoresi APS, under the patronage of the Municipality of San Vittore del Lazio. Dozens of volunteers spend weeks in the autumn rappelling down the steep slopes of Sammucro to lay cables and fix lights between rocks and cliffs: a team effort that has become part of the village's identity, passed down from generation to generation.

San Vittore del Lazio and the Valle dei Santi

The village, the southern gateway to the Lazio Region, overlooks the Valle dei Santi just a few kilometers from Cassino. Visiting San Vittore during the holidays means combining the spectacle of the world's largest tree with the discovery of an intimate historic center, medieval churches, and Ciociara cuisine: a perfect opportunity for a Christmas excursion off the beaten path.

San Vittore Christmas Tree — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the San Vittore del Lazio Christmas tree lighting has not yet been officially announced: tradition dictates the lighting on the evening of December 8th, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, with the Monte Sammucro light tree shining until January 6th and Christmas markets in Piazza Municipio. Dates will be confirmed by the Associazione Alberisti Sanvittoresi and the Municipality in autumn 2026.

Following the success of the 2025 edition, which brought the luminous outline of over 600 meters back to Monte Sammucro, the appointment with the world's largest Christmas tree is expected to return in 2026. According to tradition, the lighting will take place on the evening of December 8th from the churchyard of the Church of Santa Maria della Rosa, with the tree lit every evening until January 6, 2027. Pending the official announcement from the Associazione Alberisti Sanvittoresi APS and the Municipality of San Vittore del Lazio, dates and program remain to be confirmed.

Programme San Vittore Christmas Tree 2026

The program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published.
