A tradition the village has guarded for centuries

The Saint Lucy Fair is, along with the patronal feast, the most defining event on the calendar of Minturno, a town in the province of Latina overlooking the Gulf of Gaeta, in the far south of Lazio. It is held every year around December 13th, the day the Church commemorates Saint Lucy, and for generations, it has marked the true beginning of the Christmas season for the inhabitants.

Devotion to the saint from Syracuse has been rooted in the village for centuries. Local chronicles recount that the fair was once a massive event, animated by livestock trading of all kinds—horses, donkeys, pigs, sheep, goats, and poultry—and the sale of agricultural tools. When a family needed a tool, the answer was always the same: "I'll buy it at the Saint Lucy Fair." That bond between rural economy and the liturgical calendar is today the heart of the collective memory of Minturno.

The streets of the town center fill with stalls

The modern fair has preserved the popular structure of the past, replacing livestock with today's goods. From the early hours of the morning—opening is traditionally set at dawn, as early as six—exhibitors occupy the main arteries of the historic center: Via Principe di Piemonte, Piazza Roma, Via Generale Filippo Ciufo, Via Luigi Cadorna, and Piazza XX Agosto.

In more recent editions, the fair has extended over two days, with extended hours covering the entire day: a choice that has allowed a greater number of visitors from neighboring towns—Formia, Gaeta, Scauri, Castelforte, Santi Cosma e Damiano—to reach the village without the crowds of the early morning hours alone.

The Castle and the magic for the little ones

One of the highlights of the event is the extraordinary opening of the Ducal Castle, the fortress that dominates the historic center. During the fair, its halls host displays designed especially for families: the Enchanted House of Santa Claus, the Glacial Village, and the Toy Factory, as well as nativity scene exhibitions that showcase the crib-making art of lower Lazio. This is why many parents choose this date for their first Christmas outing with their children.

The religious dimension: the Cathedral of San Pietro Apostolo

The day remains first and foremost a religious festival. The Cathedral of San Pietro Apostolo, a building of early medieval origins constructed with reused materials from the ruins of the ancient Roman Minturnae, marks December 13th with a long sequence of Eucharistic celebrations that follow one another from early morning until evening. The church, with its three-nave basilica structure, pointed arches, and thirteenth-century Gothic bell tower, is one of the most precious monuments in the area and can be visited while enjoying the fair.

Shows, torchlight processions, and folk music

Alongside the market, the municipal administration, the Parish of San Pietro Apostolo, and the Pro Loco have built a supporting program over the years that gives the day a cultural breath. The most recurring formats are the afternoon show for children in the halls of the Ducal Castle, the torchlight procession that crosses the historic center at dusk starting from the Church of the Annunziata to end at San Pietro, and the evening folk music concert in the church, entrusted to ensembles that reinterpret the repertoire of shepherd and traveler songs with accordions, bagpipes, and frame drums. In some years, the festival has concluded with a fireworks display.

Those who arrive in Minturno for the Saint Lucy Fair find something that goes beyond a Christmas market: a medieval stone village, perched above the Garigliano plain and just a few kilometers from the sea, which for one day returns to being what it has always been, namely the commercial and devotional center of an entire territory. It is an ideal opportunity to combine a visit to the archaeological area of Minturnae, the Castle, and the Cathedral, while taking home traditional sweets.
