The festival of Red Garlic and Salt in Nubia, in the heart of the Trapani and Paceco Salt Pans
Red Gold White Gold is the food and wine festival that brings the village of Nubia to life every September. Located in the municipality of Paceco in the province of Trapani, in the heart of Western Sicily, the event celebrates the two iconic products of the region: the Red Garlic of Nubia, known for its intense aroma and recognized properties, and the Sea Salt of the Trapani and Paceco Salt Pans, harvested by hand using ancient methods. Both are Slow Food Presidia, a recognition that protects their quality and history.
The setting is the unique Trapani and Paceco Salt Pans Nature Reserve, with its windmills, reflecting pools, and the famous Salt Museum of Nubia. Here, the landscape tells a story of centuries of human labor and balance with nature. During the festival, the village becomes an open-air gastronomic hub, featuring demonstrations of manual salt harvesting, displays of traditional garlic braids, and tastings of Trapani flavors, from pesto alla trapanese to fish couscous.
The program alternates between gastronomic and cultural moments: cooking shows with local chefs, conferences on biodiversity and the value of the Presidia, amateur cooking competitions, live music, children's entertainment, and dance performances. Among the most anticipated events is the Salt Race, a running race that crosses the village, and the conferences dedicated to the candidacy of the Salt Pans as a UNESCO MaB Biosphere Reserve, a sign of a festival that unites taste, environment, and identity.
"Red Gold White Gold" is organized by the Pro Loco of Nubia APS, with the patronage of the Municipality of Paceco, the Trapani Chamber of Commerce, and the Consortium for the Protection of the Red Garlic of Nubia. It is a festival designed to involve the entire community and visitors, with free admission, capable of highlighting the agri-food excellence of Sicily and introducing an authentic corner of the Trapani area.
The new edition of Red Gold White Gold returns to the village of Nubia, a hamlet of Paceco, from September 4 to 6, 2026. The three-day format dedicated to the two local Slow Food Presidia, the Red Garlic of Nubia and the Sea Salt of the Trapani and Paceco Salt Pans, is confirmed, with a gastronomic village, cooking shows, biodiversity conferences, music, and entertainment. The full program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published: it will be announced by the organizers closer to the event.
Nubia is a hamlet of Paceco, in the province of Trapani. By car, take the A29 motorway to Trapani, then reach Nubia in a few minutes; Trapani-Birgi airport is about 15 km away. The salt pans and the Salt Museum are well signposted.
Admission to the event is free. Events generally take place from late afternoon until evening in the village of Nubia and the main square.
Don't miss a visit to the salt pans at sunset and purchasing braids of Red Garlic and sea salt directly from the producers. We recommend combining the festival with a walk in the Nature Reserve.
