About Santa Lucia Markets

Every year, around the feast of Saint Lucy, the evocative Molino Excelsior in Valderice—a jewel of industrial archaeology in the heart of the Trapani province—transforms into a Christmas village. Amidst the ancient cast-iron and larch wood millstones, the Santa Lucia Markets come to life: craft stalls, tastings of local delicacies, live music, the procession of Saint Lucy, and nativity scene exhibitions. An intimate and popular event that blends religious tradition, local flavors, and festive atmosphere.

Christmas inside a 1904 mill

The Santa Lucia Christmas Markets are one of the most beloved holiday events in Valderice, a small town in the province of Trapani overlooking the coast of western Sicily. The event takes place in a truly unique setting: the Molino Excelsior, an ancient mill dating back to 1904 commissioned by Vincenzo Gervasi. It is a true jewel of industrial archaeology, featuring an Art Nouveau facade and a bas-relief of the goddess Ceres. Purchased by the Municipality of Valderice in 1997 and carefully restored, the mill today preserves its original cast-iron, larch, and steel machinery from the Swiss-Italian firm "F.lli Buhler" and has become a vibrant center for gastronomic culture and local promotion.

What you will find at the markets

For two days, between December 12th and 14th depending on the year, the spaces of the Molino fill with stalls and the scents of Christmas. Visitors will find:

  • Crafts: Hobbyists and master artisans display handmade creations, gift ideas, and traditional Sicilian objects.
  • Gastronomy and tastings: Stands featuring local products and traditional dishes prepared by local chefs and volunteer groups.
  • Nativity scenes: The Molino's small museum hosts nativity scenes from around the world and competition entries, along with personal exhibitions by local artists.
  • Children's entertainment: Meetings with Santa Claus and letter-writing activities, organized by local volunteer associations.

The procession and the tradition of Saint Lucy

The religious and folkloric heart of the event is the procession of Saint Lucy, which departs from Piazza Sandro Pertini and reaches the Molino, accompanied by the Filardi band and local historical groups such as the Tradumari&venti association and the Monte San Giuliano historical group. The evenings are soundtracked by concerts and musical performances, ranging from folk duos to curated Christmas bands. The feast of Saint Lucy, deeply rooted in Sicilian culture, intertwines popular devotion, music, and conviviality here.

A local event

The Santa Lucia Christmas Markets are organized by the Pro Loco of Valderice with the patronage of the Municipality of Valderice and the Sicilian Region. The event, which reached its tenth edition in 2024, has grown over the years to become one of the most important Christmas showcases in the Trapani area, successfully highlighting both a monument of industrial archaeology and the artisanal and gastronomic traditions of western Sicily.
