Celebrating the alpine cheeses of the Monregalese region at Ferragosto
The Raschera and Bruss Festival is the most anticipated summer event in Frabosa Soprana, a mountain town in the province of Cuneo, Piedmont, perched at 870 meters in the heart of the Maritime Alps and the Monregalese area. For over half a century, around Ferragosto, the town transforms into a showcase of mountain flavors to celebrate the valley's two iconic cheeses: Raschera DOP, particularly its alpine version produced above 900 meters, and Bruss, the fermented cheese cream with a bold taste that is a staple of local peasant tradition.
Raschera is a cheese with a distinctive square shape, made from cow's milk with the possible addition of sheep's or goat's milk. Its alpine version is created and aged exclusively in the high-altitude territories of the Monregalese, including Frabosa Soprana, reaching its peak production right around Ferragosto. Alongside it, Bruss tells the story of peasant resourcefulness: a creamy, aromatic paste born from the fermentation of cheese scraps. The festival is the perfect opportunity to taste and purchase them directly from local producers.
For three days, Piazza Marconi and the town center streets are filled with stalls: the food area brings together producers of cheeses and typical products from the valleys, while other zones host street vendors and handicrafts. The program weaves together a historical pageant with folk groups, the famous polenta, children's entertainment, choral groups, and evening concerts. A central role is played by the Confraternity of the Knights of Raschera, which welcomes new members each year and awards the Simpatia Prize to local personalities.
In recent years, the event has been enriched by the "Confraternity of Raschera" project, which led to the creation of a small Raschera Museum within the Marble Ecomuseum and the promotion of the "Ascent to the Alpine Pastures," the mountain festival that precedes the main event, celebrating the bond between the town, its pastures, and its cheeses. Organized by the Municipality of Frabosa Soprana in collaboration with Confagricoltura Cuneo, the Raschera and Bruss Festival remains one of the most authentic food and wine events of the Cuneo summer.
The 2026 edition of the Raschera and Bruss Festival, the third promoted under the "Confraternity of Raschera" project, takes place in Frabosa Soprana on August 14, 15, and 16, 2026, expanded for the first time to three full days around Ferragosto.
Among the novelties announced by the organizers, the opening of the new Raschera Museum, set up inside the recent Marble Ecomuseum, and a photo exhibition retracing the history of past editions stand out. Traditional events are confirmed: the "Ascent to the Alpine Pastures - Mountain Festival", the Simpatia Prize awarded by the Confraternity of the Knights of Raschera, and, as a grand finale, the customary concert by the group Trelilu.
The event spans three days in Piazza Marconi and the center of Frabosa Soprana, with stalls of valley cheese producers and local products open from morning to evening.
The detailed schedule is published by the Municipality and Confagricoltura Cuneo in the weeks preceding the event.
Frabosa Soprana can be reached by car from Mondovì (about 25 km) by following the signs for Valle Maudagna; the nearest motorway exit is Mondovì (A6 Turin-Savona). By train, you can arrive at Mondovì station, then continue by bus or car.
The festival takes place around Ferragosto, with stalls open from morning until evening in Piazza Marconi and the town center.
Access to the event and performances is free; tastings and purchases of local products are paid for at individual stalls.
