About Musica sull'Aia

Every August for over thirty years, the small village of Niella Tanaro in the Monregalese area of Cuneo province transforms into an open-air stage. Musica sull'Aia brings classical and folk music directly into the town's characteristic farmyards and courtyards. These free evening performances weave together world-class artists, refined repertoires, and the intimate atmosphere of traditional Piedmontese farmsteads. It is a festival perfectly in tune with its surroundings, where audiences enjoy concerts seated among stone walls and rustic barns under the summer stars.

A festival born among the fields and farmyards

Founded in 1995, Musica sull'Aia is one of the most distinctive festivals in the Monregalese summer calendar. Its Latin motto — "Inter segestes nigella, inter areas musica", meaning "music among the wheat fields and farmyards" — perfectly captures the spirit of the event: bringing high-quality music out of concert halls and directly into the spaces of rural life, the aie (farmyards) and farmhouse courtyards.

The festival takes place entirely within the municipality of Niella Tanaro, a small village in the province of Cuneo perched on the hills that separate the Langhe from the Monregalese area in Piedmont. Each evening features a different setting: from the Aia del Castello to the Aia Beccaria, and from Cascina Berzide to the Borio and Camilla farmyards, spectators are taken on a journey through the most picturesque corners of the village.

Classical and folk music without borders

The program of Musica sull'Aia crosses genres and traditions with great freedom: classical and baroque music, singer-songwriter tracks, jazz, folk, and world music all coexist throughout the evenings. The stage hosts national and international performers — vocal ensembles, guitar and accordion duos, mandolin players, jazz trios, and female vocalists — in concerts designed to enhance the natural acoustics and intimacy of the locations.

A local cultural project

The event is organized by the Maestro Società Cooperativa together with Pro Niella Tanaro Aps, under the patronage of the Piedmont Region, the Piedmont Regional Council, the Province of Cuneo, and the Municipality of Niella Tanaro, with the support of the Ministry of Culture, the Fondazione CRC, and NuovoImaie. It is a prime example of how a small community in the Cuneo province can build a high-profile cultural offering capable of attracting enthusiasts from well beyond the region.
