The grand autumn celebration dedicated to the Marrone di Chiusa di Pesio
When autumn paints the forests of Piedmont, Chiusa di Pesio—a small town in the province of Cuneo awarded the 'Bandiera Arancione' by the Italian Touring Club—transforms into the capital of the chestnut. The King Chestnut Festival is the event that pays homage every October to the Marrone di Chiusa di Pesio, a prized fruit from the Vigne agricultural area, now protected by the Quality Park label of the Maritime Alps Protected Areas.
Established in the late nineties and grown into a regional event, the festival brings the historic center to life for four days with stalls, food stands, exhibitions, and the unmistakable aroma of roasted chestnuts wafting through the streets.
The program weaves together different themes: gastronomy, with tastings, polenta feasts under the heated marquee, lunches honoring the King Chestnut, and chestnut-based specialties; culture, with meetings on the future of chestnut cultivation and visits to chestnut promotion centers; and the territory, with guided hikes and cycling tours to discover the Pesio Valley and the Marguareis Natural Park.
The beating heart of recent editions is "Il Mundajè", the World Championship for Roasted Chestnut Makers: the name plays on the local dialect term for a chestnut roaster and celebrates an ancient mountain trade deeply rooted in the Cuneo valleys. The competition, featuring large perforated pans over open fires, has become one of the most spectacular and popular moments of the festival.
The final Sunday is dedicated to the street fair, with an area entirely reserved for the Marrone and its derivatives: jams, desserts, flours, and chestnut creams. Craft markets, local products, family entertainment, children's activities, and live music round out a day that draws visitors from across the province of Cuneo and the rest of Piedmont. The festival is organized by the Pro Loco Turismo in Valle Pesio in collaboration with the Municipality of Chiusa di Pesio and the Valle Pesio Tourist Office.
