The historic St. Martin's market in the alleys of Cornaiano/Girlan
The Martini Markt, or St. Martin's Festival, is one of the most cherished autumn events in South Tyrol. It takes place every year on November 11th in Cornaiano (known in German as Girlan), one of the eleven districts of the municipality of Appiano sulla strada del vino (Eppan an der Weinstraße), in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, in the heart of the Trentino-Alto Adige region. If November 11th falls on a Sunday, the market is held on the 10th.
The festival has deep roots in the farming calendar: St. Martin, the patron saint of the local church, once marked the end of the harvest season and the day when farmhands received their wages. It was a time for shopping, trading, and celebration. Historically, the Martini Markt was also renowned as a major livestock fair, so much so that it was jokingly nicknamed the "Last Judgment" due to the massive movement of animals and people. Today, its commercial legacy lives on in the form of a traditional festival and market with over two centuries of history.
During the festival, the charming alleys of Cornaiano come alive with around 170 exhibitors offering autumn products, gastronomic specialties, clothing, and crafts. The stalls are packed with seasonal delicacies, traditional dishes, and, of course, local wines; Cornaiano is, after all, a renowned wine-growing village in the Oltradige area. The market begins early in the morning and continues until late at night, when festivities move into the historic underground cellars of the village, where residents and visitors toast together.
Live music, great food, and the convivial atmosphere of the crowded streets make the Martini Markt much more than just a market: it is a true community celebration that unites the people of Appiano and attracts curious visitors from all over South Tyrol. Those visiting Cornaiano on this day will discover the authentic soul of a South Tyrolean wine village, suspended between peasant tradition and local hospitality.
Staying true to the fixed date of the St. Martin's celebration, the Martini Markt will be held on Wednesday, November 11, 2026, in the center of Cornaiano/Girlan, a district of Appiano sulla strada del vino. This year, about 170 stalls are expected with seasonal products, gastronomy, and the renowned wines of the Oltradige, while at the end of the market, festivities will continue in the village cellars. Program details will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
