The solemn Passion procession through the alleys of Bari Vecchia
The Procession of the Mysteries of Good Friday is one of the most deeply felt moments of Holy Week in Bari, the capital of Puglia. The origins of the rite date back to the late 18th century, when two distinct processions of the Mysteries dedicated to the Passion of Christ took place in the city. One was managed by a Marian confraternity and started from the church of the Purification of Mary, known as della Vallisa; the other originated from the convent church of San Pietro alle Fosse and, following the closure of the convent in 1812, from the church of San Gregorio.
In 1825, Archbishop Clary decreed that the two processions would alternate year by year. Since then, the Confraternity of Vallisa has paraded in even-numbered years — it is nicknamed the "chiangiaminue" because it often goes out when Easter falls early, risking rain — while the Pia Unione dei Misteri di San Gregorio parades in odd-numbered years, known as the "venteluse". This alternation is still respected today and marks the religious life of the Municipality of Bari.
The absolute protagonists are the Mysteries, 18th-century wooden statuary groups depicting the crucial moments of the Passion: Jesus in the Garden, Saint Peter, Jesus at the Column, the Ecce Homo, Jesus carrying the Cross, Saint John, Calvary with the Magdalene, the Dead Jesus, and Our Lady of Sorrows. The heavy sculptures are carried on the shoulders of the Bearers, local men dressed in dark suits or robes and mozzettas, who are divided into Companies and face a journey of nearly fifteen hours through the city.
In the morning, the procession winds through the alleys of Bari Vecchia, with its churches, courtyards, and medieval architecture, before continuing in the afternoon towards the Murat and Libertà districts. The slow, rhythmic pace of the Bearers, accompanied by the band's funeral marches, creates a solemn and moving atmosphere that draws residents and visitors along the entire route. It is a rite that unites popular faith, historical memory, and civic identity, representing one of the most characteristic events of Holy Week in Puglia.
In 2026, the Procession of the Mysteries of Good Friday in Bari was held by the Confraternity of Vallisa, as it was an even-numbered year. The nine Mysteries — Jesus in the Garden, Saint Peter, Jesus at the Column, the Ecce Homo, Jesus carrying the Cross, Saint John, Calvary with the Magdalene, the Dead Jesus, and Our Lady of Sorrows — left the church of San Gaetano to cross the Old Town. After the morning in the alleys of Bari Vecchia, the procession restarted in the afternoon from the Cathedral to reach the Murat and Libertà districts, ending late in the evening.
Every Good Friday, starting in the morning and returning late in the evening. In even-numbered years, the Confraternity of Vallisa parades; in odd-numbered years, the Confraternity of San Gregorio.
