Patronal feast and ancient woven basket fair in Miggiano
Every year, around July 16th, the small town of Miggiano, in the Lower Salento area of the province of Lecce, pauses for its most cherished celebration: the feast dedicated to the Madonna del Carmine and Santa Marina, the town's co-patron saint. It is an event that blends religious devotion with civil and popular festivities, drawing both locals and returning emigrants to the town's streets.
What makes the Miggiano festival unique is the Sagra te li Paniri (in the local Salento dialect, the "basket festival"), an ancient fair showcasing hand-woven baskets. For generations, local artisans have crafted these containers using olive shoots and reeds—humble materials from the Salento countryside, worked with patience and expertise. During the festival, master weavers demonstrate the various stages of production and display baskets filled with local specialties: vegetables, cheeses, cured meats, baked goods, extra virgin olive oil, honey, legumes, mushrooms, and Apulian wines. It is a living showcase of the peasant culture of the Capo di Leuca.
The festival is preceded by a novena that usually begins on July 7th, with masses celebrated in the Chapel of Santa Marina and the Chapel of the Madonna del Carmine. On July 16th, the solemnity of the Madonna del Carmine, the day culminates in a grand procession through the town streets. July 17th is dedicated to Santa Marina, with mass at Largo Santa Marina and a procession toward the Chapel of the Madonna del Carmine. The festival concludes on July 18th with a thanksgiving procession and traditional fireworks.
The religious program is complemented by civil festivities centered in Piazza Municipio: concerts by renowned Salento brass bands, lyrical-symphonic galas, dance evenings, pizzica, and folk music that enliven summer nights until late. The pyrotechnic display at the end is the most anticipated moment for the community.
The Feast of the Madonna del Carmine and Santa Marina, together with the Sagra te li Paniri, is an authentic opportunity to discover the truest side of Salento, far from the crowded coastal destinations: a town that preserves ancient crafts, popular devotion, and warm Apulian hospitality. Miggiano is located just a few kilometers from the beaches of Marina di Torre Vado and the evocative Capo di Leuca.
In 2026, Miggiano renews the appointment with its patronal feast dedicated to the Madonna del Carmine and Santa Marina, from July 16th to 18th. The Sagra te li Paniri, the fair of baskets woven with olive shoots and reeds that accompanies the solemnity of July 17th every year, is also confirmed.
The structure of the festival follows the established liturgical calendar: a preparatory novena, the solemnity of the Madonna del Carmine on July 16th with the grand procession, the feast of Santa Marina on July 17th, and the thanksgiving day with fireworks on July 18th. Details of the civil program in Piazza Municipio (brass bands, galas, and folk music evenings) will be communicated by the organizers in the weeks preceding the event.
The detailed 2026 civil program (names of bands and artists) will be published by the organizers closer to the festival.
Miggiano is located in Lower Salento, in the province of Lecce. By car, it can be reached via the SS275 in the direction of Santa Maria di Leuca. The nearest train station is served by Ferrovie del Sud Est; the reference airports are Brindisi-Casale and Bari-Palese.
Civil events are concentrated in Piazza Municipio, while religious celebrations take place at the Chapel of Santa Marina, the Chapel of the Madonna del Carmine, Largo Santa Marina, and the Mother Church.
Admission to the festival and the fair is free. We recommend arriving in the evening for the concerts in the square and not missing the artisan basket stands. Summer temperatures in Salento can be high: bring water and a hat.
