The patronal festival of the Salento village

The Saint Donato Patronal Festival is the most cherished summer event in Montesano Salentino, a small town in the province of Lecce, in the heart of the Apulian lower Salento. Every year, on August 6th, 7th, and 8th, the village transforms to pay homage to its patron saint, drawing not only locals but also many emigrants returning for the occasion, as well as pilgrims and curious visitors from all over Puglia.

Saint Donato, protector of those with epilepsy

Saint Donato is traditionally the protector of those with epilepsy: for centuries, the faithful have traveled to his sanctuary in hopes of receiving grace and healing—a popular cult so deep-rooted it has even been documented in ethnographic cinema. Today, this devotion is still expressed through the parade of the saint's statue, accompanied by the characteristic staff of Saint Donato, a pole adorned with red ribbons to which the faithful attach their offerings.

The days of the festival

The festival begins with the novena recited at the Mother Church. On the first day, the saint is carried in a solemn procession from the parish church to the Chapel of Saint Donato on the outskirts of town, in a parade accompanied by brass bands. The evening features the evocative launch of hot air balloons and the ceremony of the symbolic handing over of the town's keys to the saint. The following day, the statue returns in procession to the parish, while the square comes alive with the Grand Brass Band Concert performed by renowned Apulian ensembles. The third evening concludes with a major musical show in Piazza IV Novembre and fireworks.

The Expo Fair and the popular celebration

Alongside the religious dimension, the festival thrives on a strong civic and commercial spirit. During these days, the Montesano Expo Trade Fair takes place—a large regional market fair that attracts merchants from across Puglia, featuring stalls, food stands, and local artisanal products. Artistic illuminations, live music from Salento groups, and the convivial atmosphere of summer evenings complete a program that blends the sacred and the profane in the classic style of a Southern Italian patronal festival.
