The ancient Salento village transforms into a timeless Bethlehem

Among the most evocative Christmas events in the province of Lecce, the Living Nativity of Specchia transforms the historic center of this Salento village into an ancient Bethlehem. Specchia, recognized as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, offers an extraordinary natural setting: cobblestone alleys, stone courtyards, ancient palaces, and the medieval layout of the old town become the ideal stage for the re-enactment of the Nativity. The event, organized by the Lucrezia Amendolara Sports and Cultural Association in collaboration with the Municipality of Specchia and the "Presentazione Beata Vergine Maria" Parish, reached its 16th edition in 2025.
Visitors follow a long route winding through the village streets, featuring approximately 35 scenes animated by nearly 200 costumed participants. Alongside biblical episodes, the nativity scene meticulously reconstructs the ancient crafts of the Salento farming and artisan tradition, which have largely disappeared today: you will encounter shepherds warming themselves by the fire, blacksmiths, bakers, weavers, spinners, women preparing local peasant dishes, and musicians accompanying the walk with traditional folk melodies.
At the entrance, visitors are greeted by the impressive Roman legionary camp of the II Legio Augusta Association. Every evening, in Piazza del Popolo, the re-enactors perform a demonstration of Roman military techniques that engages the public. The most solemn moment arrives on January 6th, the day of Epiphany: after the celebration of Vespers in the Mother Church, a procession led by all the participants moves toward Piazza del Popolo, where the Three Wise Men arrive and the traditional kissing of the Baby Jesus takes place in the grotto.
Along the route, particularly on Via Umberto I, craft markets showcase typical products and works by Salento artisans. There is no shortage of tastings of local gastronomy, from rustic bread seasoned with olive oil to pittule, from pucce with olives to local sweets and wine, accompanying the visit in a multisensory experience made of images, sounds, scents, and flavors.
More than just a religious representation, the Living Nativity has become a defining event for the community of Specchia and the entire Salento region, capable of attracting thousands of visitors during the holiday season. The event combines popular devotion, the enhancement of the village's historical heritage, and the rediscovery of the artisan and gastronomic traditions of Puglia, offering residents and tourists an authentic way to experience Christmas in the town of Specchia.
The Living Nativity of Specchia will return, as per tradition, during the Christmas season, between late December and Epiphany on January 6th. The official dates for the 2026 edition and the related program have not yet been communicated by the Lucrezia Amendolara Sports and Cultural Association and the Municipality of Specchia. The event will likely repeat the route through the alleys of the historic center, with biblical scenes, ancient crafts, the Roman legionary camp, and Salento craft markets. This page will be updated as soon as the official dates and program are published.
