The legend of Lucrezia Amendolara comes to life in the village of Specchia
In the heart of Lower Salento, winding through the streets of Specchia — one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in Italy" in the province of Lecce — the Almond Festival takes place every summer, an event that combines historical re-enactment, live performance, and gastronomic tradition. Organized by the Circolo Cittadino di Specchia with the patronage of the Municipality and the Pro Loco, the event is held in Piazza del Popolo as part of the local summer festival calendar.
The festival was born to celebrate the figure of the Roman matron Lucrezia Amendolara who, according to local tradition, founded the ancient hamlet on August 12, 54 BC, giving rise to what would become the town of Specchia. The entire evening revolves around this legend: the love story between Lucrezia and Spartaco is brought to life by actors in period costumes, readings, dialogues, and choreography, while a narrator guides the audience through the story, inspired by the book by Professor Antonio Penna, a local scholar of the event.
The event is more than just a re-enactment: the square hosts an art exhibition curated by local artists, a workshop designed for children, and dance performances by the Kitri Ballet of Alessano, which interprets the themes of love and death at the heart of the legend. Framing the event are the rich gastronomic stalls dedicated to the almond, a symbolic product of Salento: almond paste, almond mousse, cupeta, and baked specialties like bread and pucce.
As per Salento tradition, the festival concludes with a pizzica concert that enlivens Piazza del Popolo until late at night, turning the historical re-enactment into a grand popular celebration of music and dance. It is a free event suitable for the whole family, which over the years has become one of the defining events of the Specchia summer and an opportunity to discover the village, its history, and its most authentic flavors.
The ninth edition of the Almond Festival enlivens Piazza del Popolo in Specchia on Sunday, July 12, 2026, organized by the Circolo Cittadino with the patronage of the Municipality and the Pro Loco as part of the local summer festival. The evening weaves together historical re-enactment, art, gastronomy, and Salento folk music, retracing the legend of the Roman matron Lucrezia Amendolara.
Throughout the evening, enjoy rich gastronomic stalls with almond paste, almond mousse, cupeta, bread, pucce, and other Salento specialties.
