The patronal feast of Mattinata, in the Gargano region
In the heart of the Gargano, overlooking its famous bay, Mattinata (province of Foggia, Puglia) dedicates three days of grand celebration in mid-September to its patron saint, Santa Maria della Luce. It is the most anticipated and identity-defining event of the year for the Mattinata community: a tradition over a century old that weaves together popular faith, brass band music, light displays, and fireworks, bringing the long Gargano summer to a beautiful close.
Devotion revolves around the venerated icon of the Madonna kept in the Abbey Church of Santa Maria della Luce, the only church in the historic center of Mattinata, which dates back to the 12th century. On the image's diadem, one can read the Latin inscription Mater Verae Lucis, 'Mother of the True Light', which gave the sanctuary and the feast their name. The original ancient effigy, a work of the 17th-century Neapolitan school, was stolen in 1971; since then, a faithful reproduction has been venerated and carried in procession through the town streets on the culminating day of the festivities.
The religious heart of the feast is the novena, which begins in the first days of September with the rosary, penitential celebrations, and evening Eucharistic liturgies in the mother church. The solemn days bring authoritative figures of the Church to Mattinata: the 2025 edition saw the presence of Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti, President Emeritus of the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI), and Archbishop Franco Moscone of the Archdiocese of Manfredonia–Vieste–San Giovanni Rotondo, for the solemn concelebration in the square. The descent of the icon at noon and the city procession are the moments of most intense popular participation.
Alongside the spiritual dimension, the Mattinata patronal feast offers a rich secular program: traditional brass band concerts with large wind orchestras parading through the streets, symphonic and sacred music concerts in the squares illuminated by spectacular light displays, evening light music shows, and fireworks that ignite the Gargano night. Piazza Aldo Moro and Piazza Santa Maria della Luce become the natural stages for three days of celebration that involve the entire town and the many visitors drawn to the Gargano.
Celebrating Santa Maria della Luce means experiencing the most authentic soul of Mattinata: a small village in the Gargano National Park that, between crystal-clear sea and ancient olive trees, finds the symbol of its identity in its patron saint. For the visitor, it is the ideal opportunity to discover, beyond the feast, the wonders of the territory: the beaches, sea caves, the trails of the 'Mountain of the Sun', and nearby Vieste.
The dates for the 2026 edition of the Patronal Feast of Santa Maria della Luce are official: the traditional festivities will be held in Mattinata (Foggia) from September 14 to 16, 2026, as confirmed by the municipal calendar 'Mattinata èXtraordinaria 2026'. The celebration will be preceded, as is customary, by the preparatory novena in the Abbey Church of Santa Maria della Luce.
The detailed program for the three days – including the times of the celebrations, the icon procession, band concerts, and evening shows – will be published by the Festival Committee and the Municipality of Mattinata in the weeks leading up to the event on official channels (website and social pages @Mattinataèxtraordinaria). As per tradition, the solemn procession of the sacred icon, concerts by large wind orchestras in the squares, artistic light displays, and the final fireworks show are expected.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published. The official dates are September 14-16, 2026, preceded by the novena. The complete calendar of celebrations, the procession, band concerts, and shows will be released by the Festival Committee and the Municipality of Mattinata in the weeks leading up to the event on official channels.
Mattinata can be reached by car via the SS89 Garganica; the nearest train station is in Foggia, which is then connected by bus lines. The reference airport is Bari-Palese, about a two-hour journey away.
Religious festivities are concentrated in the Abbey Church of Santa Maria della Luce, while concerts and shows enliven Piazza Aldo Moro, Piazza Santa Maria della Luce, and the streets of the center.
Celebrations, the procession, band concerts, light displays, and fireworks are free and open to all.
During the days of the festival, the town gets crowded: it is advisable to book accommodation in Mattinata or on the Gargano coast in advance and to move on foot in the center, where traffic is restricted.
