Manfredonia's grand patronal festival: a blend of faith, tradition, and the sea
The Patronal Feast of Maria Santissima di Siponto is the most anticipated event of the year in Manfredonia, a city overlooking the gulf of the same name in the Province of Foggia, in the heart of the Apulian Capitanata. The veneration of the Virgin of Siponto has its roots in the ancient city of Siponto: tradition attributes the arrival of the sacred icon to Saint Lorenzo Maiorano from Constantinople towards the end of the 5th century. When the episcopal seat was moved from Siponto to the new city of Manfredonia in 1327, the devotion of the local people to their Madonna continued uninterrupted, reaching the present day.
The precious icon, of immense religious, historical, and anthropological value, has been kept in a side chapel of the Manfredonia Cathedral since 1973 to protect it from theft and vandalism. It is from here that, on the culminating day of the festival, the image of the Virgin departs in a solemn procession.
The festivities are concentrated in the last week of August and combine the religious dimension with a rich civil program organized by the Maria SS. di Siponto Patronal Feast Committee. In the evenings leading up to the solemnity, the streets of the historic center and the seafront come alive with brass band concerts, symphonic shows, musical events in the squares, and activities for younger crowds, while artistic illuminations light up Corso Manfredi and the main thoroughfares.
Closing the cycle of festivities on September 1st is the Sea Festival dedicated to Saint Andrew the Apostle, patron saint of fishermen. From the church of Sant'Andrea in the fishermen's village, the statue of the saint is loaded onto a fishing boat for a poignant sea procession: a prayer for those lost at sea, followed by a Eucharistic celebration upon return. It is the moment when the maritime soul of Manfredonia, a city of fishermen on the lower Adriatic, manifests in all its identity-defining strength.
With the participation of over 30,000 devotees, the Feast of Maria SS. di Siponto is among the most attended religious processions in Puglia. Experiencing these days in Manfredonia means immersing yourself in a unique blend of popular faith, maritime traditions, music, and conviviality in one of the most evocative locations of the Gargano.
The 2026 Patronal Feast of Manfredonia in honor of Maria Santissima di Siponto is confirmed from August 28 to 31, 2026, with the solemn procession of the Virgin on August 31st and the conclusion entrusted, on September 1st, to the Sea Festival of Sant'Andrea, patron saint of fishermen.
For the 2026 edition, a new Patronal Feast Committee was formed in June 2026, led by president Carmela D'Apolito, with Antonio Santoro as vice-president and Massimo Verderosa managing relations with the Curia. The Committee, in collaboration with the municipal administration, manages the calendar of civil events accompanying the religious celebrations: brass band concerts, shows in the square, illuminations, and fireworks.
The complete program with artists, times, and locations will be released in the weeks preceding the festivities.
Manfredonia can be reached by car from the A14 motorway (Foggia exit) by continuing on the SS89 Garganica. By train, the reference station is Foggia, which is connected to Manfredonia by bus lines. The nearest airport is Bari-Palese, about an hour and a half away by road.
The civil and religious festivities take place from August 28th to 31st, with the solemn procession on August 31st. The Sea Festival in honor of Sant'Andrea is held on September 1st.
The main events are concentrated between the historic center, Corso Manfredi, the Cathedral, and the seafront. During the festival evenings, the center is crowded: it is advisable to arrive early and park in the outer areas. Participation in the events is generally free.
