Every September, the historic center of Monte Sant'Angelo, in the Province of Foggia, becomes an open-air stage for the Historical Procession of the Apparitions of Saint Michael the Archangel. This is no mere costume re-enactment: it is a genuine sacred drama, heir to the medieval Laude Drammatiche tradition, which portrays the apparitions of the Archangel Michael on Mount Gargano and the millennial pilgrimage to the Sacred Grotto.
The procession through the city streets
At sunset, over 300 performers and actors and three scenic floats parade along the main streets of the Gargano town. The procession starts from Piazza Giovanni Paolo II and winds through Via Tancredi, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, and Via Reale Basilica, reaching Piazza Carlo d'Angiò in the heart of the old town. Costumes, banners, and allegories guide the audience on a journey through history, faith, and collective memory.
The Sacred Representation
The highlight is the Sacred Representation in Piazza Beneficenza: musical tableaux dedicated to the apparitions are introduced by biblical prologues related to the Archangel Michael and enriched by the choreographic interpretation of professional dancers. The dramatization traces the Gargano Legend—from the episode of the Bull to the apparition to the Bishop of Siponto, from the Battle to the Dedication of the Basilica—restoring the profound meaning of the Michaelic cult that has made Monte Sant'Angelo one of the oldest pilgrimage destinations in Europe.

The procession takes place in the setting of the Sanctuary of Saint Michael the Archangel, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list (as part of the "Longobards in Italy") and the spiritual heart of the Gargano. How to get there
Monte Sant'Angelo is located in the heart of the Gargano, in the Province of Foggia. By car, take the A14 motorway (Foggia or San Severo exit) and continue towards the Gargano; from Manfredonia, climb up to the town along the SS272. The nearest train station is Foggia, which is connected to Monte Sant'Angelo by bus.
Admission and times
The event is free and takes place along the streets of the historic center. The procession usually starts at 6:30 PM from Piazza Giovanni Paolo II; the Sacred Representation takes place around 8:00 PM in Piazza Beneficenza.
Tips
The historic center features narrow alleys and staircases: comfortable shoes are recommended. It is advisable to arrive early to secure a good spot along the route and in the square. This is an ideal occasion to also visit the Sanctuary of Saint Michael and the medieval Junno district.
