The "Festival of Festivals" in the Gargano: a blend of faith, tradition, and major concerts
In Cagnano Varano, a village overlooking the coastal lake of the same name in the heart of the Gargano, the days from May 8th to 10th are known as the "Festival of Festivals." It is a time when the entire community gathers around its two Patron Saints: Saint Michael the Archangel, celebrated on May 8th, and Saint Catald the Bishop, honored on May 10th. This tradition has woven together religious devotion, folk customs, and public celebrations for centuries.
The religious heart of the festival beats between the Mother Church and the Grotto-Sanctuary of Saint Michael, the destination for the traditional pilgrimage that winds through the town streets. The liturgical calendar includes holy masses, a solemn Eucharistic concelebration, and the procession of the statues of the two saints, carried on the shoulders of the faithful amidst crowds, illuminations, and the sound of brass bands. Saint Catald, a bishop of Irish origin venerated throughout much of Southern Italy, and Saint Michael the Archangel, whose devotion in the Gargano is linked to the nearby sanctuary of Monte Sant'Angelo, represent the deep spiritual identity of this community.
Alongside the religious rites, the secular festivities transform Cagnano Varano into a vast open-air stage. The main squaresโabove all Piazza Giannoneโhost concerts by nationally renowned artists every evening, while the streets light up with artistic illuminations and fill with market stalls. There is no shortage of brass band concerts featuring sacred and pop music, folk performances, traditional games for all ages, and the unmissable pyromusical shows that conclude the festival at night.
Located in the province of Foggia, within the Gargano National Park, Cagnano Varano experiences this festival as one of the most heartfelt moments of the year, drawing back emigrants and visitors alike. For those arriving from outside, it is the ideal opportunity to discover an authentic corner of Puglia, far from the beaten path of mass tourism, nestled between Lake Varano, the Gargano hills, and the warm hospitality of a community that pours its pride and sense of belonging into its patronal feast.
For the 2026 edition, Cagnano Varano celebrated its Patron Saints with a rich calendar that combined religious observance with entertainment. The highlight was the concert by singer-songwriter Michele Zarrillo in Piazza Giannone on the evening of May 10th, followed at midnight by a pyromusical show in the San Michele Park area. The proven formula was confirmed, featuring the town band, the pilgrimage to the Grotto, and the street market throughout the village.
Cagnano Varano is located in the Gargano, in the province of Foggia. By car, it can be reached via the SS693 road along the coast of Lake Varano; the provincial capital, Foggia, is about 60 km away. The nearest train station is in San Severo, which is connected by local bus lines.
The patronal feast is traditionally held from May 8th to 10th, with side events beginning in the first days of the month.
All religious events and concerts in the squares are free of charge. It is recommended to arrive early for the major concert evenings in Piazza Giannone.
