The Santa Maria delle Grazie Festival is the primary religious and popular celebration in San Giovanni Rotondo, a town in the Province of Foggia, nestled in the heart of the Gargano, Puglia. Known worldwide as the city of Saint Pio of Pietrelcina, San Giovanni Rotondo gathers every year around its patron, the Madonna delle Grazie, in a festival that unites deep devotion with massive popular participation, drawing thousands of faithful, pilgrims, and visitors.
The heart of the festival is religious in nature. Festivities begin at the end of August with the solemn procession of the Sacred Painting of the Madonna delle Grazie, which is carried from the Sanctuary to the Mother Church of San Leonardo, where the icon remains exposed for the veneration of the faithful until September 10th. The procession, accompanied by the local brass band, winds through Viale Cappuccini, Piazza Europa, and Corso Regina Margherita, involving the entire community. The solemn day includes a Eucharistic celebration presided over by the Bishop and the grand evening procession through the town streets.
Alongside the liturgical program, the Patronal Festival and Events Committee, with the patronage of the Municipality of San Giovanni Rotondo, organizes a rich lineup of free musical performances. The main stages are set up in Piazza Europa and at Parco del Papa, which have hosted prominent artists from the Italian scene over the years. The city dresses up for the occasion with traditional illuminations and brass bands, in an atmosphere that weaves together the sacred and the profane, typical of the great patronal feasts of Southern Italy.
The Santa Maria delle Grazie Festival represents one of the most anticipated events on the Gargano calendar in early September. For those visiting San Giovanni Rotondo, it is the perfect opportunity to experience the spirituality of Saint Pio's sites while breathing in the authentic festive atmosphere of a Puglian community, amidst faith, music, and tradition.
The dates and program for the 2026 edition of the Santa Maria delle Grazie Festival have not yet been announced. As per tradition, the festivities in honor of the patron saint of San Giovanni Rotondo should take place in early September, around the feast of the Nativity of Mary (September 8th), with the procession of the Sacred Painting from the Sanctuary to the Church of San Leonardo and the usual lineup of shows. We will update this page with dates, the religious program, and artists as soon as the Patronal Festival and Events Committee publishes the official information.
San Giovanni Rotondo is located in the Gargano, in the Province of Foggia. By car, it can be reached via the A14 motorway (Foggia or San Severo exit), continuing along the SS272. The nearest train station is Foggia, which is connected to the city by bus.
Concerts and events in Piazza Europa and at Parco del Papa are free of charge. It is recommended to arrive early for major evening concerts.
During the festival days, the center is very crowded: it is advisable to park in the outer areas and reach the squares on foot. There is a wide range of accommodation available, given the city's tourist and pilgrimage vocation.
