The patronal feast of Rodi Garganico, blending faith, sea, and Gargano tradition
Rodi Garganico, a small seaside village perched on the Gargano promontory in the province of Foggia, experiences its most anticipated time of the year during the Patronal Feast of Maria SS.ma della Libera and Saint Christopher. For nearly two weeks, between late June and July 3rd, the streets of the historic center overlooking the Adriatic fill with lights, music, and devotion, welcoming residents, returning emigrants, and the many tourists of the Gargano coast.
Tradition traces the cult of the Madonna della Libera back to an event in 1453. According to legend, a ship sailing from Constantinople to Venice, carrying sacred images saved from the Ottoman conquest, mysteriously stopped off the coast of Rodi on July 2nd. The captain found an icon of the Virgin resting on a rock; only after finding it in the same spot three times did he understand the divine will and donate the painting to the city. The image, depicting Mary enthroned with the Child and dating back likely to the 15th century, is kept in the Sanctuary of Maria SS. della Libera, a chapel later expanded in the 18th century and consecrated as a church in 1826. The patron saint is joined by Saint Christopher, protector of travelers, celebrated on July 3rd.
The calendar weaves together spiritual moments and popular festivities. The religious portion opens with the Eucharistic celebration in the Church of San Nicola di Myra, the blessing of the bearers, and the procession toward the Sanctuary, followed by the traditional novena. The heart of the celebrations takes place on July 2nd and 3rd, with solemn processions of the sacred images through the city streets.
Alongside faith, the secular festival brings concerts, brass band performances, street artists, the lighting of the illuminations, and, as a grand finale, the fireworks display over the sea. It is the moment when the Municipality of Rodi Garganico and the entire Gargano community come together, between the sacred and the profane, in one of the most heartfelt patronal feasts in northern Puglia.
In 2026, the festivities in honor of Maria SS. della Libera and Saint Christopher open on June 22nd with the Eucharistic celebration in the Church of San Nicola di Myra, the blessing of the bearers, and the procession toward the Sanctuary, followed by the novena. The secular program, starting June 26th, brings concerts, brass bands, illuminations, and evening events to the center of Rodi Garganico, while July 2nd and 3rd are dedicated to solemn processions and patronal rites, with the final fireworks display over the sea.
Traditional novena with daily prayer moments and liturgical celebrations in preparation for the feast.
The program may be subject to change: it is recommended to check the official channels of the Municipality of Rodi Garganico.
Rodi Garganico can be reached by car from the A14 motorway (Poggio Imperiale exit) by continuing along the Gargano coast; by train via the Ferrovie del Gargano line (Rodi Garganico station); in summer, maritime connections to the Tremiti Islands are available.
All religious and secular events are free of charge.
During the festival, the village and parking areas are very crowded: it is advisable to arrive early. The evening events in the square and the processions on July 2nd-3rd are the most popular moments.
