Three evenings of handmade gnocchi, folk music, and fried pastries in the village of Pantuliano
The Gnocchi Festival takes place in Pantuliano, a small hamlet within the Municipality of Pastorano, in the province of Caserta, deep in the Campania region. Every year, around mid-June, the "C. Caricchia" Sports Center transforms for three nights into a massive open-air kitchen, complete with communal seating, food stalls, and a stage for live music. It is a small, intentionally local event—Pastorano has fewer than three thousand residents—but it is by far the most anticipated gathering of the year for the Pantuliano community.
The festival did not start as a tourist attraction, but rather as an offshoot of the Patronal Feast of Saint John the Baptist, the village's patron saint, celebrated on June 24th. For this reason, locals still refer to it as the "Saint John Gnocchi Festival," always scheduling it in the days leading up to the holiday. What began as a parish committee initiative has evolved over the years into a convivial celebration involving the entire district, managed by the Pro Loco of Pastorano alongside the festival committee. The 2025 edition was noted by local press as the fourteenth.
The star of the show is, of course, the fresh gnocchi, prepared by hand by local cooks following family recipes and served primarily with a slow-cooked Campanian ragù. The preparation process takes over a month and involves volunteers of all ages: those who have guarded the recipe for decades, younger generations helping with assembly, and children learning how to ridge the pasta. This collective effort is as much a part of the ritual as the festival evenings themselves.
The stalls complement the main course with a variety of local specialties:
Every night, after the stalls open, the program continues with live music: folk bands, traditional Southern Italian repertoire, and dance parties. Recent editions have featured local artists and ensembles—in 2024, for example, Francesco Lucca, the Juanny Dance show, and the group Votavò – La Barca di Teseo. Alongside the stage, there is entertainment for children and exhibitor booths, making the evening perfect for families.
Admission is free: you only pay for what you consume at the stalls. The event opens in the evening, typically from 8:00 PM, and the spacious sports center grounds offer easy parking. As this is a popular festival among neighboring towns, it is advisable to arrive early, especially on Saturdays, to secure a table.
Pastorano is located just a few kilometers from the Capua exit of the A1 motorway, in an agricultural area between the Volturno river and the foothills of the Middle Volturno, close to Capua, Santa Maria Capua Vetere, and the provincial capital, Caserta. A stop at the festival pairs perfectly with a day dedicated to the province's historical heritage and remains one of the most authentic ways to experience the food—and the community spirit—of inland Campania.
The festival returned to Pantuliano, a hamlet of the Municipality of Pastorano in the province of Caserta, from Friday, June 19 to Sunday, June 21, 2026, in the usual space of the "C. Caricchia" Sports Center. Some press outlets indicated an early opening starting Thursday, June 18: the format, in any case, remained the same, with stalls active in the evening and the weekend serving as the highlight.
The stars were the fresh, hand-kneaded gnocchi prepared by local cooks, served primarily with Campanian ragù, accompanied by montanarine, sandwiches, and the guanto pantulianese, the ancient local fried pastry. There was no shortage of typical products from the Caserta area.
Every evening, the program featured live music with bands and traditional Southern Italian repertoire, as well as entertainment for children. The organization remained entrusted to the Pro Loco of Pastorano and the festival committee, in keeping with the tradition of the Feast of Saint John the Baptist, the patron saint of Pantuliano.
