Formicola's most heartfelt celebration, between the Sanctuary and the village
In the heart of the Alto Casertano, the small town of Formicola (Province of Caserta, Campania) experiences its most defining celebration every summer: the one dedicated to Maria SS.ma del Castello, a beloved patron saint venerated in the Sanctuary that stands on the slopes of Monte Maggiore. A tradition rooted in nearly seven centuries of history, it continues to unite the entire Formicola community around the Marian cult from generation to generation.
The Sanctuary of Maria SS.ma del Castello overlooks the village and is where the icon of the Virgin is kept for most of the year. According to local tradition, the bond between Formicola and its Madonna del Castello dates back many centuries and has remained unchanged through the ages, becoming the strongest symbol of the village's identity. Even today, the faithful entrust their fears and hopes to the Virgin in a rite that is renewed every year with the same intensity.
The moment that opens the celebrations is the solemn descent of the icon: the statue of the Virgin is carried in procession from the Sanctuary to the Church of the Holy Spirit in the town center, accompanied by the brass band. Here, the Madonna remains exposed for the veneration of the faithful throughout the summer, with daily prayer appointments, the Rosary, the Novena, and Holy Mass. The cycle closes on August 15th, the day of the Assumption, when the statue is escorted back in procession to the Sanctuary amidst the community's deep emotion.
The culmination of the festivities is the so-called August festival, which falls on the first Sunday of the month. Announced by the festive sound of bells and the launch of fireworks, the solemn day is marked by multiple Eucharistic celebrations, including a mass presided over by the Bishop, and culminates in the grand procession through the streets of the town with the statue of the Madonna. Alongside the religious dimension, secular moments flourish: concerts in the square, illuminations, musical shows, and the participation of local associations, which turn Formicola into a meeting point for residents and emigrants who return to the village specifically for this occasion.
More than just an event, the Feast of Maria SS.ma del Castello is the thread that holds together the memory and the present of Formicola. For visitors, it is an opportunity to discover an authentic village in the Campanian hinterland, its popular religiosity, its hospitality, and the landscape of Monte Maggiore, far from mass tourism circuits. The Municipality of Formicola and the parish community organize a festival every year that weaves together faith, folklore, and conviviality.
For 2026, the community of Formicola renews its devotion to Maria SS.ma del Castello with a calendar full of religious and secular events, spread between July and August. Confirmed by the local press, the edition combines as always the spiritual moment, with celebrations presided over by Bishop Msgr. Giacomo Cirulli and parish priests, and the festive one, with music in Piazza Giuseppe Fusco and the highly anticipated concert by Sugarfree. The heart remains the procession on the first Sunday of August and the return of the icon to the Sanctuary on August 15th.
Formicola is located in the Alto Casertano, in the Province of Caserta. By car, it can be reached from the Caserta Nord exit (A1 motorway), then continuing along the provincial roads towards Monte Maggiore. The reference railway station is Caserta, which is connected by local bus lines.
Religious celebrations and events in the square are free of charge. Appropriate attire is recommended for church services and the procession.
