About Feast of Saint Anthony

Every year, on the penultimate Sunday of August, the small hillside village of Giano Vetusto, in the province of Caserta, gathers around its patron saint, Anthony of Padua. Following a solemn triduum, the pear-wood statue is carried in procession through the village streets before returning to the square for the evocative 'Riffa della palma' auction. Between masses, brass bands, food stalls, evening concerts, and fireworks, the festival weaves together faith, tradition, and community at the foot of Monte Maggiore.

The Patronal Feast of Giano Vetusto

The Patronal Feast of Saint Anthony of Padua is the most cherished event of the year for Giano Vetusto, a small village of just over six hundred inhabitants nestled in the hills of the Caserta hinterland, in Campania. Every year, on the penultimate Sunday of August, the village at the foot of Monte Maggiore fills with faithful, returning emigrants, and visitors from neighboring towns to honor the community's patron saint.

The Patron Saint and Devotion

Saint Anthony of Padua, revered as the saint of the poor and lost causes, is the patron of Giano Vetusto. The festival is rooted in ancient devotion, passed down through generations. Religious celebrations are preceded by a solemn triduum of prayer in the Mother Church, culminating on the day of the feast with a solemn mass and a grand procession.

The Procession and the Riffa della palma

The heart of the festival is the procession: the statue of the saint, entirely carved from pear wood, is carried on shoulders through almost every street in the village, accompanied by a brass band and the entire community. Upon returning to the square, the most characteristic tradition takes place: the Riffa della palma, an auction of the silk handkerchief tied to the palm held in the saint's right hand. Winning the 'Riffa' is considered a good omen for one's family, and the bidding can reach significant amounts.

Music, Gastronomy, and Fireworks

Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers the classic program of Campanian village feasts: food stalls with local dishes and traditional sweets, craft stalls, entertainment for children, and evening concerts in the square. The festivities span three or four evenings, concluding with a spectacular fireworks display that illuminates the sky above the village.

A Village at the Foot of Monte Maggiore

Giano Vetusto, whose name recalls an ancient temple dedicated to the god Janus, sits at an altitude of approximately 225 meters in the Monti Trebulani area, in the province of Caserta. It is a town with an agricultural tradition, linked to olive cultivation, which finds the most authentic sense of its identity in the patronal feast every summer. For visitors, the Feast of Saint Anthony is the ideal opportunity to discover a lesser-known corner of inland Campania, amidst popular spirituality, genuine flavors, and village hospitality.
