About Chestnuts and Novello in the Village

Every November, the village of Squille, a hamlet of Castel Campagnano in the province of Caserta, comes alive with the Castagne, Novello e Pallagrello al Borgo festival. Within the historic center's alleys, food stalls offer roasted chestnuts, novello wine, and the prized Pallagrello, alongside traditional rural dishes from the Alto Casertano region. Roaming live music, local crafts, and the convivial atmosphere of the Colline Caiatine complete this free-entry event organized by the Silla Association.

An autumn feast in the heart of the Alto Casertano

Castagne, Novello e Pallagrello al Borgo is the festival that animates Squille, a small hamlet in the municipality of Castel Campagnano, Caserta, every November. Nestled in the Colline Caiatine hills of Campania, the village opens its alleys and squares, transforming into a large open-air dining area where the scent of roasted chestnuts mingles with that of freshly tapped new wine.

Flavors of rural tradition

The absolute stars of the event are the autumn products of the Caserta region. Along the food and wine trail, you will find stalls serving freshly cooked chestnuts, novello wine, and above all Pallagrello, a historic native grape variety of the area that finds one of its most authentic expressions here. Alongside these iconic products, local cuisine offers traditional specialties such as:

  • grilled arrosticini;
  • vegetable ciambotta;
  • padellaccia;
  • hanged caciocavallo cheese;
  • fried pizza.

Each dish tells the gastronomic story of a rural territory that has preserved the recipes and knowledge of the past.

Music, crafts, and the village atmosphere

The festival is about more than just taste. In the evenings, roaming live music accompanies visitors through the alleys, while Largo Palazzo hosts local craft stalls and regional producers. The result is an immersive experience of conviviality, lights, and flavors that highlights one of the most charming villages in the Colline Caiatine.

A young but well-established event

Launched in 2024 and reaching its third edition in 2026, the festival is organized by the Silla Association, a group active in Squille that promotes other seasonal and local product events, such as the asparagus festival. In just a few years, the event has become a fixture of the Caserta autumn, attracting visitors from neighboring towns and beyond, offering yet another reason to discover Castel Campagnano and its hamlets. Admission is free and the environment is family-friendly.
