Prickly Pear Festival

A historic festival in the heart of the Terra di Lavoro

The Prickly Pear Festival is one of the most deeply rooted and recognizable events in the province of Caserta. It takes place every year in early September in the village of Castel Morrone, a small town in Campania nestled in the hills of the Terra di Lavoro, just a few kilometers from the provincial capital. Celebrating its fiftieth edition in 2025, the festival has its roots in local peasant culture and the town's strong connection to the prickly pear, a Mediterranean fruit that ripens during this period on the sunny slopes surrounding the village.

The prickly pear takes center stage

For four days, the historic center transforms into a grand culinary trail: Piazza Bronzetti becomes the beating heart of the festival, while stalls and stands are scattered throughout the courtyards, alleys, and squares of the village. The prickly pear is the true star, featured in a thousand ways, from freshly peeled fruit to traditional desserts and delicacies. Alongside it, you will find typical local products, from sheep-meat specialties to artisanal sweets, served by local residents and town volunteers.

The Gara del Solco, an ancient ritual

A defining element of the event is the Gara del Solco, a traditional competition linked to the September 8th feast in honor of Maria SS. della Misericordia. Teams of local farmers carve furrows that wind from the valley up toward the sanctuary of Monte Castello: the furrows are judged on their linearity, length, difficulty of the path, visibility, and visual impact. It is a test of skill and faith that evokes the community's centuries-old relationship with the land and its own devotional heritage.

The festival evenings are enlivened by live concerts, street performers, and shows that fill the squares until late at night. The format combines a culinary focus with entertainment, attracting thousands of visitors from across the province of Caserta and Campania every year.
