About San Lorenzo Festival

Every year, around August 10th, the San Lorenzo district of Pietravairano comes alive for the San Lorenzo Festival, organized by the Il Pozzo di San Lorenzo APS association. Around the ancient well that gives the neighborhood its name, evenings are filled with local Pietravairano specialties—handmade gnocchi, cavatelli with ragù, beans and sausage, fried pizza, and porchetta sandwiches—alongside live music, devotional moments, and children's games. An authentic village festival in the Alto Casertano region of Campania.

A village festival in the Alto Casertano

The San Lorenzo Festival is one of the most beloved summer events in Pietravairano, a small town in the Province of Caserta, Campania, nestled at the foot of Mount Caievola in the valley that rises from the Volturno river towards the Matese mountains. The festival takes place around August 10th, the day the Church commemorates Saint Lawrence the Martyr, and is held in the district named after the saint: here, around the historic San Lorenzo well, the Il Pozzo di San Lorenzo APS association sets up food stalls, a stage, and an entertainment area every year.

Devotion and neighborhood life

As is the case with many festivals in the Caserta area, religious and social traditions go hand in hand. The days begin with Holy Mass in honor of Saint Lawrence celebrated at the historic well, after which the district transforms into a large open-air kitchen. This is not a tourist-driven event; it is a celebration organized by the residents for themselves, which over the years has attracted visitors from neighboring towns—Vairano Patenora, Pietramelara, Caianello, Riardo—and the Terra di Lavoro plain.

Pietravairano cuisine on the table

The heart of the festival is the food stalls, which generally open in the late afternoon, around 7:30 PM, serving dishes freshly prepared with local ingredients. Recent editions have featured:

  • handmade gnocchi and cavatelli with ragù, the fresh pasta of local peasant tradition;
  • pennette alla San Lorenzo, the festival's signature dish;
  • beans and sausage, soffritto, and grilled meats;
  • fried pizza, cuoppo (fried street food cone), and porchetta sandwiches;
  • draft beer, local wine, and artisanal desserts.

Service is based on a ticket system purchased at the cash desk, allowing you to compose your own dinner by visiting different stations.

Music, shows, and tradition

Every evening features a performance on stage. Past editions have showcased folk and popular music groups, cover bands, traditional dance performances, and DJ sets to end the night. The 2024 edition, the twenty-seventh, featured the Black and Blues band, the New Old Generation group, and a closing night with DJ Cortellessa and MC Enzo T, in addition to a vintage car rally organized by the "il cinquino" association of Pietramelara and a cultural tribute to local poet Andrea Leone. A fireworks display is planned for the final evenings.

A family-friendly event

The festival reserves space for children: painting workshops, live painting, games, and entertainment organized in the district square. This is one of the aspects that makes the festival suitable for all ages, with long outdoor tables where entire families gather until late at night.

Why visit Pietravairano

Beyond the festival, Pietravairano is worth a stop: the village preserves a medieval layout with castle ruins and, on the summit of Mount San Nicola, the exceptional Italic theater-temple of the Samnite age, one of the most evocative archaeological sites in inland Campania, identified from the air in the 2000s. An evening at the San Lorenzo Festival can therefore be combined with a day dedicated to the archaeological heritage and landscapes of the Alto Casertano.

Information and updates

The detailed program is released every year shortly before the festival, mainly through the organizing association's social media channels and the local Terra di Lavoro press. Those planning their trip in advance can check dates and times on the Facebook and Instagram pages of the Il Pozzo di San Lorenzo APS association.
