About U Triunfu ra Marunnuzza

In the dead of night, while the town sleeps, Ciminna glows with asphodel torches and massive bonfires to celebrate U Triunfu ra Marunnuzza, an Immaculate Conception festival dating back over two centuries. At four in the morning, the small statue of the Madonna leaves the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi and winds through the village streets accompanied by folk songs and a brass band, continuing until the first light of dawn. It is one of the most evocative and ancient religious traditions in all of Sicily, celebrated alongside the local flavors of 'nfriulata.

A night of fire and devotion in Ciminna

Tucked away in the province of Palermo, Ciminna preserves one of Sicily's most ancient and identity-defining celebrations: U Triunfu ra Marunnuzza, the festival dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. For over two hundred years, on the night between the Saturday and Sunday following December 8th, the entire town gathers for a nocturnal procession unlike any other on the island.

The origin: the 1781 statue

The tradition traces its roots back to 1781, when the friars of the Convent of San Francesco d'Assisi commissioned a wooden statue of the Immaculate Conception, with delivery set for December 7th. According to local lore passed down through generations, the people of Ciminna went out to meet the statue in the middle of the night, welcoming it in triumph and accompanying it through the streets: this event gave birth to U Triunfu, the "triumph" of the little Madonna ("Marunnuzza" in the Sicilian dialect).

The nocturnal procession

The highlight is the procession that begins at four in the morning from the Church of San Francesco d'Assisi and returns at the first light of dawn, after traversing the narrow streets of the historic center. The small float carrying the statue of the Immaculate Conception moves forward accompanied by folk songs and a brass band, while the path is illuminated by spectacular asphodel torches (the "mazzuna") and bundles of stacked wood that burn like massive bonfires, known as "vampe". Along the way, the procession makes traditional stops for acclamations to the Immaculate Conception, in an atmosphere suspended between prayer and popular celebration.

'Nfriulata and the flavors of the festival

The eve, Saturday night, is dedicated to gastronomy: the people of Ciminna feast on sausage and 'nfriulata, delicious focaccias stuffed with minced pork, onions, and spices, baked in a wood-fired oven and washed down with good local wine. It is a convivial ritual that precedes the night vigil and has even inspired dedicated initiatives in Ciminna, such as the 'Nfriulata Day.

A heritage of the village

Included in the calendar of winter festivals of the province of Palermo and the Sicily Region, U Triunfu ra Marunnuzza is much more than a religious celebration: it is the moment when Ciminna rediscovers its deepest identity through devotion, fire, and song. For those visiting Sicily during the Christmas season, witnessing this procession in the heart of the night is an authentic and unforgettable experience.
