A festival in the heart of the Madonie

The Feast of the Immaculate Conception is one of the most deeply rooted religious celebrations in Montemaggiore Belsito, a town in the Metropolitan City of Palermo located on the slopes of the Madonie mountains, in Sicily. Every year, in the days leading up to and including December 8th, the town gathers around the figure of the Immaculate Virgin in a series of faith-filled events that weave together liturgy, processions, and popular traditions passed down through generations.

The novena and the 'Notturna' procession

Festivities open on November 29th with the so-called 'Notturna', an evocative evening procession that winds through the town's streets, announcing the start of the preparation period for the feast. From November 30th to December 7th, the novena takes place, marked each evening by religious services at the Church of San Filippo Apostolo, the spiritual heart of the celebrations.

The ancient tradition of the bonfire

Among the customs most cherished by the community is one of secular origin linked to the end of the novena: in the past, young people would gather wood to light a large bonfire in front of the church in honor of the Madonna. This gesture, which illuminates the winter evening, continues to represent a moment of pure devotion and strong unity for all the people of Montemaggiore.

December 8th: The solemn day

The day of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, December 8th, marks the peak of the festivities. In the morning, Holy Mass is celebrated at the Church of San Filippo Apostolo, followed in the late morning by the procession of the Virgin Immaculate, which travels through the streets of the town with the participation of the faithful. In the late afternoon, the day concludes with the solemn Pontifical Mass, the highest liturgical moment of the feast.

A defining event for the town

More than just a single event, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception is an occasion of collective identity for Montemaggiore Belsito: a thread that binds religious devotion to the town's memory, its families, and the traditions of the Madonie.
