The centuries-old patronal festival of Lercara Friddi, in the heart of Sicily

The Most Holy Crucifix Festival is the main religious celebration of Lercara Friddi, a town in the hinterland of Palermo, in the heart of Sicily. This is a centuries-old tradition: in 2025, the festivities reached their 349th edition, a testament to a tradition passed down uninterrupted for over three centuries that continues to unite the entire Lercara community.
At the center of the devotion is the ancient statue of the Crucified Christ, a precious 16th-century image kept in the Mother Church of San Matteo, which recently underwent a restoration that brought its ancient splendor back to light. The Crucifix is considered by the faithful to be the beating heart of local religiosity, a destination for prayer and entrustment all year round.
The festivities are usually concentrated in the second half of September and span several days. The opening is marked by the firing of mortars in the late afternoon, followed by the solemn octave mass and the switching on of the evocative luminarie (light displays) that illuminate the historic center. The following day, at dawn, the traditional livestock fair comes to life, an ancient event linked to the agricultural vocation of the area, while the town band accompanies the confraternity on their collection rounds through the streets of the town.
The highlight is the solemn procession of the statue: the Crucified Christ is carried on shoulders along the streets of Lercara Friddi, accompanied by a large and moved procession of the faithful, some of whom follow the route barefoot as a vow. The final day features the characteristic fireworks display that lights up the town's sky and seals the solemn festivities.
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers a rich secular program consisting of musical performances, cabaret evenings, and free concerts in Piazza Duomo: in 2025, the grand finale was entrusted to a concert by the singer Fausto Leali, one of the most recognizable voices in Italian music. Markets and stalls also come to life along the streets of the center, while the festive atmosphere involves residents, devotees, and numerous emigrants who return to the town specifically for the Crucifix festival.
For Lercara Friddi, the Most Holy Crucifix Festival is not just a religious event, but a true moment of identity that intertwines faith, collective memory, and sociality. It is the occasion when the community gathers and tells its own story, in a typically Sicilian balance between the sacred and the popular.
