A living nativity scene beneath the Rocca, amidst stone caves and age-old crafts
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Roccapalumba Living Nativity, organized by the APS OHANA association under the title «Venite adoremus – Living Nativity beneath the Rocca», is one of the most enchanting Christmas events in the Sicani Mountains, in the upper Torto river valley, in the province of Palermo. The event comes to life in the heart of the historic center, where the Rocca — the dolomite cliff that overlooks and gives the town its name — is dotted with ancient caves and dwellings carved into the stone. These very caves become the authentic backdrop for a performance that transports visitors back in time.
During the nativity, the old homes return to being taverns, blacksmith and carpenter workshops, dairies, bakeries, pasta and Christmas pastry labs, and sheepfolds. More than eighty costumed performers realistically reconstruct the ancient crafts and daily life scenes of 19th-century Sicilian rural and pastoral society, interacting with visitors as they wander through the village alleys.
The itinerary is not merely a static exhibition: it is an immersive journey where the sounds, scents, and gestures of past labor come to life. Local children perform traditional songs in dialect, accompanied by bagpipes, flutes, and traditional Sicilian instruments, and the entire community gathers around a festival aimed at strengthening ties between generations.
Along the route, there is no shortage of tastings of humble peasant dishes: warm ricotta in whey, chickpea soup, seasoned bread, pasta with wild fennel, spiced wine, and typical holiday sweets like ucciddati and muffulietti. Every taste tells a piece of the territory's gastronomic memory.
The Municipality of Roccapalumba is a small village in the Sicani Mountains known throughout Italy as the «Town of the Stars», thanks to its astronomical observatory and a location that has attracted stargazers from all over the world. Visiting the living nativity is also an opportunity to discover the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Luce, nestled in the crevice of the Rocca, the Church of Maria SS. del Rosario, the «F. R. Fazio» Territory Museum dedicated to rural culture, and the characteristic Fiaccati water mill. A visit that weaves together nature, faith, and popular traditions in the heart of inland Sicily.
At the moment, the dates for the 2026 edition of the Roccapalumba Living Nativity have not yet been announced. The event, curated by APS OHANA under the title «Venite adoremus – Living Nativity beneath the Rocca», is usually held in mid-December in the village's historic center, in the province of Palermo.
The well-established structure remains, featuring the setting up of ancient caves as workshops, taverns, and inns, the presence of over eighty costumed performers, and tastings of traditional Sicilian peasant flavors. The detailed program will be published by the organizers closer to the Christmas holidays.
The event is traditionally held in mid-December, during the Christmas season. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced: we recommend following the official Facebook page for updates.
