Two Saturdays in June among the pastures of the National Park, discovering the wild spinach of the Comino Valley
Orapi are a type of wild spinach that grows in the high-altitude pastures of the Central Apennines, particularly within the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, where transhumance and traditional grazing have encouraged their spread for centuries. In Picinisco, a stone village overlooking the Comino Valley in the province of Frosinone, this humble plant has become the symbol of a mountain cuisine made of simple ingredients and deep-rooted memories. This is the origin of the Orapi Festival - Walking Among Scents and Colors, organized by the Pro Loco "Prof. Orfeo Vacca" with the patronage of the Municipality, the Lazio Region, and the National Park.
The well-established format features two separate Saturdays in June. The first is a day of nature: meeting in the morning at the Prati di Mezzo square, one of the most beautiful plateaus on the Lazio side of the Park, and setting off for a hike along the '5 Ancient Beeches' trail, accompanied by official Park guides and the Carabinieri Forestali.
The second Saturday is a day of conviviality: the village fills with stalls, scents, and music for a grand gastronomic evening in the historic center, complete with an artisan and local produce market.
The educational heart of the festival is the field lesson led by Lorenzo Vacca, who teaches how to distinguish edible, medicinal, and aromatic wild herbs of the area during the walk. Beyond orapi, you will learn to recognize:
It is a small open-air course that restores the original meaning of the walk for shepherds: reading the meadow like a pantry.
At midday, the hike concludes in Valle Tabaccara, at the mountain hut known as "Baraccone delle Femmine", where a traditional lunch is served: a first course based on orapi gathered in the Park, grilled meat, and folk music. It is the most anticipated moment, where the naturalistic and gastronomic sides of the festival come together.
On the second Saturday, the festival moves from the pastures to the village. In the afternoon, there is space for games and entertainment for children; in the evening, a grand open-air dinner in the town center, with orapi pasta, grilled meats, arrosticini, bruschetta, Pecorino di Picinisco DOP, and local wine. The square also hosts an artisan market, while the musical entertainment is provided by folk groups from the Ciociaria and Abruzzo traditions.
Picinisco is part of the Comino Valley village circuit, on the far eastern border of Lazio, where the province of Frosinone meets Abruzzo. It is one of the few Lazio municipalities entirely included within the National Park perimeter, and it is famous for its Protected Designation of Origin pecorino cheese and for the landscapes that struck the writer D.H. Lawrence, who stayed here in 1919. Participating in the Orapi Festival therefore also means discovering a piece of mountain Lazio rarely touched by mass tourism, made of stone alleys, plateaus, and flocks.
The 2026 edition of Walking Among Scents and Colors marked the ten-year milestone, confirming the two-day format promoted by the Pro Loco "Prof. Orfeo Vacca" with the patronage of the Municipality of Picinisco, the Lazio Region, and the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park.
The first Saturday brought participants to the Prati di Mezzo plateaus for the guided walk and the lesson on recognizing wild herbs; the second transformed the historic center into a large open-air dining room, with the kitchen entrusted to chef Ben Hirst and the Pecorino di Picinisco DOP as the star alongside the Park's orapi.
By car: A1 motorway, exit at Cassino, then take the SS509 towards Atina and Picinisco (about 30 minutes). Prati di Mezzo can be reached from the center of Picinisco via a mountain road of about 12 km. The nearest train station is Cassino, on the Rome-Naples line via Cassino.
Participation in the hike and lunch in Valle Tabaccara requires mandatory booking with the Pro Loco of Picinisco: tel. +39 347 8900463 - +39 347 8500667, e-mail [email protected].
For the hiking day, trekking shoes, water, and layered clothing are essential: you will be walking above 1,000 meters in altitude and the temperature can change rapidly. The evening in the village does not require a reservation for access to the square, but it is advisable to arrive early to find a spot.
Agritourisms and B&Bs in Picinisco, Villa Latina, and Atina; more options are available in the Cassino area and the Abruzzo side of the Park.
