About Picinisco Beer Festival

In mid-August, the village of Picinisco in the province of Frosinone comes alive with the Craft Beer Festival. This evening is dedicated to breweries from the Ciociaria region, paired with traditional pastoral dishes from the Comino Valley and local wines. Expect live music, tasting stalls, and open-air dining under the stars of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park for one of the most convivial nights of the Picinisco summer.

A fresh festival in the highest village of the Comino Valley

The Craft Beer Festival is one of the most successful additions to the summer calendar in Picinisco, a town in the province of Frosinone, in southern Lazio. Launched just a few years ago, the event quickly found its audience: the second edition took place on August 14, 2025, as part of the Estate Piciniscana, a program that runs from June to October, filling the season with food festivals, concerts, religious feasts, and culinary events.

The setting is a huge part of the evening's charm. Picinisco is a stone-built village overlooking the Comino Valley, nestled within the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, with the Mainarde mountains as a backdrop. Even in mid-August, when the lowlands are sweltering, the evening air up here remains crispโ€”the perfect condition for an outdoor festival that lasts well into the night.

Ciociaria craft beer in the spotlight

The common thread is craft beer produced in the province of Frosinone. In recent years, the Ciociaria region has seen the growth of a small but robust brewing scene, consisting of microbreweries that develop their own recipes, often using mountain water and local ingredients. The festival is the perfect opportunity to sample them side-by-side while chatting directly with the producers: the brewers themselves serve at the stalls and share stories about their styles, fermentation processes, and pairings.

Alongside the beer taps, you will find wines from the Comino Valley, a growing wine-producing area that is rediscovering long-forgotten native grape varieties. It is a choice consistent with the spirit of the event: not just a generic gathering, but a showcase of what the local territory has to offer.

Picinisco's pastoral cuisine

Picinisco is a land of shepherds, and its gastronomic identity revolves around cheese: the Pecorino di Picinisco PDO is the town's signature product, celebrated annually at the Pastorizia in Festival. At the Beer Festival, the kitchen serves traditional pastoral dishes: cheeses, cured meats, grilled meats, and rustic first courses. Pairing a well-structured craft beer with aged mountain pecorino is, for those who try it here, a small revelation.

Music and conviviality

The evening is brought to life by live music, with local bands playing until late. There is no massive stage or large-scale festival programming; the atmosphere is that of a village feast, with shared tables, children running between the stalls, and families eating outdoors. It is the kind of event that captures the most authentic essence of summer in the Apennine villages.

When to go

The event traditionally takes place in mid-August, around the Ferragosto holiday, when Picinisco reaches its peak vitality thanks to returning emigrants and summer visitors. Those planning a stay in the Comino Valley can combine the festival with hikes in the National Park, a visit to the medieval historic center, and other events of the Estate Piciniscana, which in the same period features the Orapi Festival and various traditional celebrations.

Why it's worth the trip

  • A selection of craft breweries from the province of Frosinone that are hard to find all in one place elsewhere.
  • The pairing with Pecorino di Picinisco PDO and local pastoral cuisine.
  • A mountain village at over 700 meters above sea level, inside the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park.
  • A genuine atmosphere, far from mass-market commercial events.
