A festival where three mountains meet

The Three Borders Mountain Festival is one of the most cherished summer events in the hinterland of the Frosinone province, in the Lazio region. It takes place in a location of great symbolic value: the Campo del Popolo, a vast natural plateau at the foot of Monte Cairo, exactly where the boundaries of the three municipalities of Casalattico, Terelle, and Colle San Magno converge. Hence the festival's name: a single day where three mountain communities gather around what unites them, nestled between the Comino and Liri Valleys.

A plateau steeped in history

The Campo del Popolo is no ordinary place. This natural amphitheater, set in the Apennines of the Alta Terra di Lavoro, has been the backdrop for centuries of history: it is land tied to the memory of post-unification brigandage and figures who still spark passionate debate today. Gathering up here, amidst high-altitude meadows and panoramas stretching across the two valleys, also means reclaiming a piece of the collective identity of the Ciociaria Apennines.

A restored tradition

The festival has deep roots: in its historical editions, it had already surpassed a quarter-century of existence. After a period of interruption, the event was revived in 2022 through the joint efforts of the three municipal administrations and local communities, returning as a fixed date on the area's summer calendar.

A typical day

The Three Borders Mountain Festival is a daytime event that spans an entire Sunday in August. The program follows a well-tested format that combines religious observance, craftsmanship, and conviviality:

• Morning: Welcoming visitors and opening the craft markets featuring local products.
• At noon: Celebration of Holy Mass outdoors and opening of food stalls serving typical Ciociaria and mountain cuisine.
• Afternoon: Musical entertainment with folk and traditional music, before closing in the late afternoon.

Mountain flavors and crafts

The gastronomic heart of the festival celebrates typical products and the peasant cuisine of the Apennines: simple, genuine dishes linked to shepherding and the land, served in a convivial, open-air setting. Craft exhibitors complete the picture with local handiwork and small-scale regional production.

For those who love the mountains, the day is also an opportunity to discover the Campo del Popolo and the trails of Monte Cairo, a popular destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts. Not far away, the Comino Valley holds gems like Lake Posta Fibreno, completing an itinerary through the wonders of the Frosinone hinterland.
