The queen of festivals in the Alto Sangro, in the heart of the Abruzzo National Park

The Gnocchi Festival is the most anticipated gastronomic event in Opi, a small mountain village in the province of L'Aquila, in Abruzzo. Every year, towards the end of August, the medieval historic center comes alive for two evenings dedicated to the signature dish of local tradition: Opi-style gnocchi with meat sauce. Often called the "queen of festivals in the Alto Sangro," the event reached its fortieth edition in 2025, a testament to a deep-rooted popular tradition lived with pride by the entire community.
The heart of the festival lies in the gnocchi prepared by hand by the local women, following a recipe passed down through generations and topped with a savory meat sauce. Alongside the star dish, food stalls offer other Abruzzo specialties: arrosticini, sausage with sauce, local cheeses, grilled scamorza, bread, and traditional desserts, all paired with local wine. For years, the festival has paid special attention to inclusion, with a complete gluten-free menu created in collaboration with volunteers from the Italian Celiac Association (AIC Abruzzo), ensuring that celiac guests can also enjoy the gnocchi and other dishes.
The festival evenings are marked by folk and ballroom music, with orchestras and bands enlivening the village squares, local craft markets, children's workshops, and traditional games. The most spectacular moment arrives at midnight, when the historic center lights up with a fireworks display that closes the first evening, set against the stone walls and alleys of the village. For several editions, the event has also committed to environmental sustainability, using biodegradable tableware in a "plastic-free" approach, consistent with the naturalistic vocation of the territory.
Opi is located along the Val Fondillo, in a panoramic position in the heart of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, among mountains rich in forests, flora, and fauna. The setting of the medieval village, with its perched structure and evocative views, makes the Gnocchi Festival an experience that weaves together gastronomy, nature, and local identity. The festival, organized by the Pro Loco of Opi, represents a significant meeting point for the small municipality and a major tourist attraction in the Alto Sangro summer calendar.
At the moment, the Pro Loco of Opi has not yet announced the official dates for the 2026 edition of the Gnocchi Festival. In continuity with previous editions, the event is expected to take place on a weekend in late August in the historic center of Opi, in the province of L'Aquila, featuring handmade gnocchi with meat sauce, Abruzzo culinary specialties, live music, and the traditional fireworks display. For updated dates and the program, we recommend following the official Pro Loco channels.
Opi can be reached by car via the SS83 Marsicana, in the heart of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park; the village is about an hour and a half from Avezzano and the A25 motorway exits. The nearest train station is Alfedena-Scontrone, on the Sulmona-Isernia line.
The festival traditionally takes place over a weekend in late August, spanning two evenings, with food stalls opening at 7:00 PM.
