The mountain village Christmas festival, featuring a crochet tree and the Santa Claus Band
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
When December arrives, the small village of Acquafondata, perched in the mountains of the Frosinone province in Lazio, gathers in its main square to kick off the holiday season. Christmas in the Square is the event that ignites the magic of the most wonderful time of the year, designed to bring the entire community together in a spirit of warmth and sharing.
The heart of the event is the unveiling of the Christmas tree made entirely of crochet. This is no ordinary decoration: it is the result of a collective effort involving many villagers, united in crafting—stitch by stitch—a tree made of wool, color, and patience. It is a project that showcases the creativity and sense of belonging of a small mountain community, capable of transforming the ancient art of crochet into a shared symbol of the holidays.
The day is animated by the music of the CittĂ di Acquafondata Band, one of the village's most deeply rooted cultural institutions, which transforms for the occasion into the cheerful Santa Claus Band. The band's notes accompany the lighting of the tree and fill the village streets, bringing joy to both young and old.
The social aspect is equally important, with food stalls inviting visitors to savor local flavors amidst the chill of the Apennine winter. The organizers' invitation is clear: anyone who wishes can bring a musical instrument—a guitar, a tambourine, an accordion—to join the party and turn the square into a grand moment of collective music-making and singing.
Located at over 900 meters above sea level in the Mainarde mountains, on the border between Lazio, Abruzzo, and Molise, Acquafondata is one of the smallest and highest municipalities in the province of Frosinone. Its history is tied to the pastoral traditions of the Ciociaria region and an ancient musical heritage, also evidenced by the event dedicated to the zampogna (bagpipes). With Christmas in the Square, the village renews the pleasure of coming together, proving how even the smallest communities can preserve and reinvent the authentic spirit of the holidays.
Information regarding the 2026 edition of Christmas in the Square in Acquafondata, in the province of Frosinone, has not yet been published. Continuing the tradition of the December 2025 event—dedicated to the inauguration of the community-made crochet Christmas tree, the Santa Claus Band, and food stalls—the mountain village is expected to renew its holiday gathering in the square this year. Dates, times, and the program will be announced by the organizers as the holidays approach.
Christmas in the Square takes place during the holiday season, generally in the first half of December. The 2025 edition was held on Sunday, December 7th; dates for the 2026 edition will be announced by the organizers.
The event enlivens the main square of Acquafondata, in the province of Frosinone (Lazio), a mountain village in the Mainarde range.
By car: from the A1 Rome-Naples motorway, take the Cassino exit and continue along the provincial roads leading up to Acquafondata and the Comino Valley. The nearest train station is in Cassino, from where you can continue by car.
The event is free to attend. Food and drinks at the stalls are available for purchase.
