The early summer livestock and trade fair in the Passeier Valley
The Neumarkt is one of four historic markets (the so-called Vieh- und Krämermärkte, or livestock and trade fairs) that have marked the calendar for centuries in St. Leonhard in Passeier, in the heart of the Passeier Valley, in the province of Bolzano. Alongside the Josefimarkt in March, the Michaelsmarkt in September, and the Leonhardsmarkt in November, the June Neumarkt remains one of the most cherished meeting points for the local community, where rural tradition and village life remain deeply intertwined.
On the day of the Neumarkt, the center of St. Leonhard transforms into a bustling hub of commerce. Stalls are spread across the Kohlstatt, a section of the Andreas-Hofer-Straße parking area, the Dorfbrücke (village bridge), and the Raiffeisenplatz. Here, you will find everything from everyday household goods, clothing, and farming tools to the South Tyrolean gastronomic specialties that make these markets a true culinary delight.
What sets the Neumarkt apart from a standard trade fair is its authentic rural soul. Alongside the Krämermarkt (the trade market), the event features an agricultural machinery fair and the livestock market, which takes place along Andreas-Hofer-Straße. It is a vital occasion for the valley's farmers, who have always used these gatherings to buy, sell, and exchange ideas. For the event, the municipality implements road closures and detours, clearly signposted, with access to the village guaranteed via the bypass.
The Neumarkt is traditionally held on the first Saturday of June in St. Leonhard in Passeier. Organized by the municipality (Marktgemeinde St. Leonhard in Passeier) in collaboration with the Passeier Valley tourist board, it is a free-entry event that combines the practical function of a market with the pleasure of a festive day in one of South Tyrol's most characteristic villages.
On Saturday, June 6, 2026, the center of St. Leonhard in Passeier hosted the annual edition of the Neumarkt. As per tradition, the agricultural machinery fair and the livestock market also took place along Andreas-Hofer-Straße. Road closures and detours were implemented for the day, with access to the village provided via the bypass.
