About Algunder Abendkonzerte

The Algunder Abendkonzerte are a series of evening concerts performed annually by the Algunder Musikkapelle, one of South Tyrol's oldest and most renowned brass bands, in their home town. From May to October, these musical evenings mark the season in Lagundo (Algund), located in the Burgraviato area near Merano. Under the direction of maestro Christian Laimer, the ensemble of over eighty musicians presents a varied and challenging program, ranging from classical transcriptions to traditional marches and polkas. Concerts are held in the Raiffeisen hall of the Vereinshaus Peter Thalguter, with free admission.

A band tradition spanning nearly two centuries

The Algunder Abendkonzerte are the evening concerts of the Algunder Musikkapelle, the brass band of the municipality of Lagundo (Algund), in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, Trentino-South Tyrol. Founded in 1837 by maestro Johann Eberhart with just nine members for the St. Sebastian procession, the band is now one of the oldest and most well-known in South Tyrol, featuring around eighty active musicians.

Evening concerts at the Thalguterhaus

During the warmer months, from spring to early autumn, the band organizes a series of evening concerts that allow both Lagundo residents and visitors to enjoy their performances throughout the year. The evenings take place at the Vereinshaus Peter Thalguter (Thalguterhaus), in the Raiffeisen hall, in the town center. Concerts generally start at 8:30 PM and admission is free.

The program and the conductor

Musical direction has been entrusted since 2000 to maestro Christian Laimer, a graduate of the Innsbruck Conservatory and the first South Tyrolean to earn a master's degree in wind orchestra conducting at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Under his guidance, the Abendkonzerte offer a broad and carefully curated repertoire:

  • transcriptions of classical, operatic, and operetta works;
  • original compositions for wind orchestra;
  • marches, waltzes, and polkas from the South Tyrolean brass band tradition;
  • film scores and musical theater pieces.

Each evening offers a varied and demanding program that combines the rigor of great symphonic literature with the liveliness of Alpine folk music.

Lagundo and the South Tyrolean band culture

In Lagundo, at the gates of Merano, the Musikkapelle is more than just a musical ensemble; it is a cornerstone of community life, accompanying the town's major civil and religious events and fostering the training of young instrumentalists. The Algunder Abendkonzerte represent the moment this long tradition opens up to the public in a true concert format, within an intimate and welcoming setting in the heart of the Burgraviato.
