The harvest thanksgiving market on Raiffeisenplatz in Schenna
The Schenna Herbstmarkt is one of the most cherished autumn events in the municipality of Schenna, a delightful holiday village overlooking Merano in the province of Bolzano, Trentino-South Tyrol. Every late October, the central Raiffeisenplatz transforms into a lively market dedicated to the harvest thanksgiving (Erntedank), a key moment in the South Tyrolean farming calendar.
Innkeepers, farmers, artisans, and artists gather in the square: stalls featuring local products, gastronomic specialties, and handcrafted items accompany a day of conviviality. The unmistakable scent of roasted chestnuts fills the air, inviting visitors to savor South Tyrolean delicacies in true Törggelen style — the rural tradition that, once the grape harvest is over, celebrates the season's bounty with new wine, chestnuts, and rustic dishes.
The soundtrack is provided by traditional Tyrolean folk music, known in Schenna as music "with a Tyrolean heart" (mit Tiroler Herz): accordions, brass instruments, and folk melodies create the warm, authentic atmosphere typical of South Tyrolean village festivals.
The Herbstmarkt is part of the broader Herbstgenuss in Schenna autumn program, which brings numerous initiatives to the village from September to November: the Herbstfest parade, Frühschoppen with Törggelen, and the Schenner Bauernkuchl — when the square becomes a large rustic kitchen serving dumplings, sauerkraut, and freshly made fritters — as well as tastings in farmhouses nestled among vineyards and apple orchards. The autumn market represents one of the most popular and beloved moments, attracting guests and curious visitors from across the Meraner Land.
