The St. Leonard livestock and trade fair, blending rural market traditions with the patron saint festival in Val Passiria
The Leonhardsmarkt is the major autumn market in San Leonardo in Passiria (St. Leonhard in Passeier in German), the most populous town in the Val Passiria, located in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, Trentino-Alto Adige. It takes place in early November, coinciding with the feast of the village's patron saint, and marks the conclusion of the four livestock and trade markets (Vieh- & Krämermärkte) that bring the village to life throughout the year.
Visitors arriving in San Leonardo on this day will find the town transformed: the central streets—Passeirer Straße, Kohlstatt, and Raiffeisenplatz—are lined with stalls from itinerant merchants (the Krämer) selling clothing, household goods, tools, sweets, and South Tyrolean gastronomic specialties. This is not a tourist-oriented market, but an authentic folk fair, primarily frequented by the inhabitants of the valley.
Alongside the stalls, the fair's original rural vocation remains strong: one section is dedicated to the livestock market (Viehmarkt) and another to agricultural machinery and equipment, providing a valuable opportunity for farmers and mountain farm owners in Val Passiria to trade, exchange ideas, and conduct business just as they did in the past.
The market takes its name from St. Leonard of Noblac (Leonard of Limoges), a Frankish hermit who lived between the 5th and 6th centuries and is the patron saint of the municipality, celebrated on November 6th. In Alpine tradition, St. Leonard is invoked as the protector of livestock, domestic animals, and prisoners; it is no coincidence that the village's most important farming fair, which bears his name, is dedicated to him. The link between the patronal feast, religious devotion, and the livestock market is a hallmark of rural communities in South Tyrol.
The Leonhardsmarkt is part of a cycle of four traditional events that take place every year in San Leonardo in Passiria: the Josefimarkt in spring, the Neumarkt in early summer, the Michaelsmarkt at the end of September, and finally, the Leonhardsmarkt in November. These events have been rooted in the community's life for time immemorial and remain a vital meeting point for the entire valley today.
The Leonhardsmarkt 2026 will be held on Saturday, November 4 in the center of San Leonardo in Passiria/St. Leonhard in Passeier, in the Val Passiria (Province of Bolzano). It is the last of the four traditional markets of the year and falls during the days of the feast of the patron saint, St. Leonard.
As per tradition, the village hosts three market features: the itinerant stalls (Krämermarkt) along Passeirer Straße, Kohlstatt, and Raiffeisenplatz, the livestock market, and the section dedicated to agricultural machinery and equipment. On fair days, access to the center is via the bypass road. Free admission.
