The popular and devotional festival of the people of Marsala in honor of Maria Santissima della Cava

In the heart of Marsala, on the western tip of Sicily in the province of Trapani, devotion to Maria Santissima della Cava is an essential part of the city's identity. "Misiddra" is the affectionate name the local dialect uses for the Madonna della Cava, the city's main patron saint: a popular term with which the people of Marsala address their protector and the festival that celebrates her.
The cult originated in the Porticella area, home to the Santuario di Maria Santissima della Cava, built into an ancient cave carved out of tuff. According to tradition, the Virgin appeared in a dream to the Augustinian friar Leonardo Savina, urging him to dig in an abandoned quarry. On January 19, 1518, following the collapse of a boulder covering a well, a small marble statue of the Madonna and Child, just eighteen centimeters tall, was found. Legend has it that the statue had been hidden centuries earlier by the faithful of Lilibeo to protect it from iconoclastic persecutions. In 1788, the city officially elected the Madonna della Cava as its patron saint.
Devotion to Misiddra accompanies the people of Marsala throughout the calendar. The grand patronal festival is celebrated on January 19, the anniversary of the statue's discovery, featuring a novena, a solemn mass, and a procession that winds through the streets of the historic center to the Town Hall. Other commemorations mark her proclamation as patron saint and the miraculous events attributed to the Virgin over the centuries, including ancient public prayers invoked by the community during times of hardship, such as natural disasters and infestations that plagued the Lilibetan countryside.
Beyond the strictly liturgical dimension, the Misiddra Festival retains its character as a popular celebration: the faithful gather at the Santuario della Cava for prayer and to venerate the small statue, kept in a precious silver reliquary, while the gestures of local popular devotion are renewed. It is an occasion that unites the city's different generations around a strong symbolic identity, capable of intertwining the community's centuries-old history with the living faith of today.
For the people of Marsala, the Misiddra Festival is not just a religious event, but a moment of identity and belonging that renews the bond between the city and its "Misiddra" every year.
