About Medieval Trapani

Every November, the historic centre of Trapani transforms into a medieval village for the 'Manfredi di Trinacria' Historical Re-enactment. Recognized by the Ministry of Culture, the event commemorates the death of young Manfredi, son of Frederick III of Aragon and Eleanor of Anjou, which occurred in Trapani on 9 November 1317. Between the Real Complesso Monumentale di San Domenico and the city streets, the event features costumed processions, historical villages, falconry, fire shows, and guided tours, offering an immersive journey into the Aragonese Trapani of the 14th century.

A re-enactment in the Aragonese heart of Trapani

The 'Manfredi di Trinacria' Historical Re-enactment, also known as Medieval Trapani, is one of the most cherished historical events in Western Sicily. Organized by the culture and tradition association Trapani: tradumari&venti with the patronage of the Municipality of Trapani and in collaboration with the Rectory of San Domenico, the re-enactment takes place every year in November, around the 9th, the anniversary of young Manfredi's death.

The historical episode

The event commemorates the figure of Manfredi of Trinacria, Duke of Athens, son of King Frederick III of Aragon and Queen Eleanor of Anjou. According to tradition, the young prince died in Trapani on 9 November 1317 following a fall from his horse. His remains rest in the Real Chiesa di San Domenico, where his tomb can still be found today. The re-enactment traces the arrival of the Aragonese royal family, welcomed by the nobility, knights, and the people of Trapani, in a living fresco of the medieval city.

Processions, historical village, and shows

The programme spans several days. The most anticipated moment is the grand royal procession, which winds through the historic centre with over two hundred participants in period costumes from all over Sicily, accompanied by musicians, flag-wavers, and delegations of nobles. Inside the Cloister of the Real Complesso Monumentale di San Domenico, a medieval village comes to life with craft workshops, taverns serving ancient flavours, military and civilian camps. There is no shortage of falconry with birds of prey and the 'baptism of the glove', fire shows, jugglers, and entertainment.

  • Royal procession through the streets of the historic centre
  • Medieval village in the Cloister of San Domenico
  • Falconry, fire shows, and street arts
  • Guided tours of the Church of San Domenico, the Chapel of the Crusaders, and Manfredi's tomb
  • Opening of the octagonal Bell Tower

A national recognition

The Trapani re-enactment is included in the National Mapping of Historical Re-enactments of the Ministry of Culture, confirming its cultural and identity value. For the city of Trapani, in the heart of the homonymous province in Sicily, the event represents a precious opportunity to rediscover its Aragonese roots and enhance the monumental heritage of the San Domenico complex.

Atmosphere and hospitality

Free for the main areas, the event attracts numerous visitors and medieval history enthusiasts every year. Walking among the lights of the Bell Tower, the scents of the historical village, and the sounds of ancient instruments means living an immersive experience in 14th-century Trapani, amidst faith, tradition, and spectacle.
