An itinerant Christmas through the districts of Misiliscemi

Natale delle Contrade is the widespread Christmas festival promoted by the Municipality of Misiliscemi, in the province of Trapani, Sicily. More than just a single event, it is a calendar of celebrations that spans the entire municipal territory: every evening, from early December until Epiphany, a different district becomes the heart of the festivities. Concerts, living nativity scenes, choral recitals, performances, and moments of reflection take place in the churches, squares, and historic bagli (traditional fortified farmhouses) of the villages, in a journey that combines art, culture, spirituality, and community spirit.

The youngest municipality in the Trapani area

Misiliscemi is one of Italy's most recent municipalities: established in 2021 through the detachment of eight districts from the city of Trapani — Marausa, Rilievo, Salinagrande, Palma, Guarrato, Locogrande, Fontanasalsa, and Pietretagliate — it stretches across the countryside between Trapani and Marsala, just a stone's throw from the sea and the salt pans. Its name derives from the Arabic Manzil-al-Escemmu, meaning "high place where water flows." Because it is a young community, Natale delle Contrade holds special significance: it is the moment when these villages, once scattered outskirts, recognize themselves as a single citizenry celebrating together.

The Lighting of the Trees and the widespread program

The festivities kick off on December 8th with the traditional Lighting of the Trees, a symbol of unity and well-wishes for the entire community. From that moment, the calendar unfolds from district to district with events for all ages:

• Living nativity scenes in the evocative setting of the Ex Baglio Rindinella in Guarrato;
• Christmas and New Year's concerts, featuring choirs, brass bands, and chamber ensembles in the village churches;
• Choral recitals and performances dedicated to the Christmas message, organized by local associations and groups;
• Solidarity initiatives and moments of sharing involving citizens, parishes, and the youth council.

A community celebration

Organized by the municipal administration with the support of local associations, citizens, and the youth council, Natale delle Contrade is not a spectacular event in the commercial sense, but a network of small, authentic gatherings that traverse the Trapani countryside. For those visiting the area during the Christmas season, it is an opportunity to discover a lesser-known corner of the province of Trapani, far from the beaten path, where the Sicilian tradition of the nativity scene and Christmas carols can still be felt in the district churches and the voices of parish choirs.
