Allegorical floats, local districts, and town square festivities in the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese
Every February, San Marzano sul Sarno, a town in the province of Salerno, Campania, transforms into a grand open-air stage. The Marzanese Carnival is a town festival in the most authentic sense: no big television productions, just allegorical floats patiently built by the local districts, costumed groups, loud music, and entire families taking to the streets. The tradition of papier-mâché, here as in other towns of the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese, is deeply rooted and cherished.
After a five-year hiatus, the Marzanese Carnival returned in 2025 thanks to the efforts of local associations and the support of the Municipality of San Marzano sul Sarno. This comeback was more than just another event on the calendar; it was the recovery of a piece of collective identity, with the town's historic groups back at work on the floats and the community drawn back into the square. The coordination of the event is now entrusted to the Gioventù Marzanese association, which has taken up the mantle and solidified the event in the province's carnival calendar.
The heart of the festival lies in the floats, created in the preceding months by groups representing the town's districts and neighborhoods. In the 2026 edition, two allegorical floats paraded through the town center:
Alongside the floats, costumed groups parade, often with choreography prepared specifically for the occasion. Over the years, other local groups such as Belvedere, Picone, and Quei Bravi Ragazzi have also worked on building the floats: a sign of how widespread and shared this activity is within the town's fabric.
Piazza Amendola is the focal point of the Marzanese Carnival: this is where the processions arrive, and where the music, entertainment, and parties that close each parade day are concentrated. It is a town-sized space that allows children, families, and costumed groups to gather together without the dilution typical of large city carnivals.
San Marzano sul Sarno does not celebrate alone. The Marzanese floats participate in the Agro Carnival, a parade that brings together floats from multiple towns in the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese in a single procession. On February 8, 2026, the floats from San Marzano sul Sarno paraded alongside those from Nocera Inferiore and Sarno, departing at 3:00 PM from Via Ingegno toward the town center. It is a formula that strengthens the bond between neighboring towns and allows visitors to see the best of local papier-mâché gathered in a single afternoon.
Those who arrive in San Marzano sul Sarno will not find a postcard-perfect carnival, but a genuine, grassroots celebration. Participation counts more than the spectacle: local associations, youth groups, and dance schools enliven the afternoons, while the municipal administration, the Local Police, and civil protection associations ensure the safety of the route. Recent editions have also featured the allegorical representation of the «Death of the Carnival», one of the most typical rites of the Campanian carnival tradition, which symbolically closes the festival cycle and opens the path to Lent.
The Marzanese Carnival is concentrated in the days around Shrove Tuesday and therefore falls between February and early March, depending on the liturgical calendar. Parade days are generally in the afternoon, with some morning appointments designed especially for children. Admission is free and no booking is required: just arrive in town and follow the music.
The 2026 edition confirmed the positive momentum of the Marzanese Carnival, which has returned permanently to the calendar of San Marzano sul Sarno after years of absence. Coordination was entrusted to the Gioventù Marzanese association, which built a program spread over three days of celebration in Piazza Amendola, on February 15, 17, and 21, 2026.
Two allegorical floats paraded through the streets of the center: «The Farmer and the Bees», created by the Acciara Group, and «Marvel Heroes», presented by the Sant'Antuono District. The three parades were followed by as many closing parties, with music, artists, and entertainment moments, in addition to the traditional Carnival raffle.
The 2026 calendar had already opened on Sunday, February 8, with the participation of the Marzanese floats in the Agro Carnival: a single procession that brought together the floats of San Marzano sul Sarno, Nocera Inferiore, and Sarno, departing at 3:00 PM from Via Ingegno toward the town center.
San Marzano sul Sarno is located in the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese, in the province of Salerno, about 30 km from Naples and 30 km from Salerno. By car, you can reach it via the A30 Caserta-Salerno motorway (Nocera-Pagani exit) or the A3 Naples-Salerno motorway. The most convenient train stations are those of Sarno and Nocera Inferiore, which are connected to the town by bus lines.
The parades and parties are concentrated in Piazza Amendola and the streets of the center of San Marzano sul Sarno. During the passage of the floats, temporary traffic closures are planned: it is advisable to park in the neighboring streets and reach the square on foot.
Participation in the parades and square parties is free. Any side initiatives organized by the groups (raffles, food stalls, dance evenings) may require a contribution.
