A food and wine walking tour through the landscapes of Battifollo, in the Mongia Valley
"Mangia, Bèiva e Bùgia" — which translates from Piedmontese as "Eat, drink, and get moving" — is the gastronomic walking tour that the Pro Loco of Battifollo, a town in the Province of Cuneo, Piedmont, hosts every spring. The formula is as simple as it is successful: a 7.4-kilometer loop featuring six gourmet stops, one for each course, from breakfast to the final dessert. Between stops, participants walk at their own pace, immersed in the rolling hills of the Mongia Valley.
The beauty of this event lies in the fact that the food stations are not concentrated in a single square, but are spread across the most scenic spots of the village. As you sample dishes prepared by local volunteers, your gaze can wander over the Mongia, Cevetta, and Tanaro valleys, and on clear days, all the way to the Alps and the unmistakable silhouette of Monviso. Battifollo sits at an altitude of over 800 meters, dominated by the ruins of its ancient castle, providing a stunning backdrop for the walk.
The stars of the menu are local products: among the most popular specialties are gnocchi made with local chestnut flour, a symbol of the ancient forests surrounding the village. The loop trail is suitable for the whole family and spans approximately 7 kilometers of culinary delights.
Organized entirely by Pro Loco volunteers, "Mangia, Bèiva e Bùgia" is one of the events that kick off the season in Battifollo, followed by the Battifest in July, the polenta festival in August, and the historic Autumn Chestnut Festival. The organizers' goal is to promote the region and rediscover local traditions, offering an increasingly wider audience a chance to discover an authentic corner of the Cuneo area, far from the main tourist crowds. Recent editions have attracted several hundred participants, a sign of its growing success year after year.
The third edition of the gastronomic walk organized by the Pro Loco of Battifollo recorded a very positive outcome, with over 300 participants arriving to walk the 7.4 km loop through the hills of the Mongia Valley. Departures were staggered in groups based on the number of registrants to ensure everyone could maintain a steady pace along the six stops.
Once again this year, the food stations were located at the village's scenic viewpoints, from the initial breakfast to the final dessert, with the famous chestnut flour gnocchi among the most appreciated dishes. The uncertain weather forecasts did not stop the walkers, confirming the public's growing affection for this community event.
In case of bad weather, the event was postponed to a later date.
The walk takes place on a Sunday in spring. Registration and the collection of gadgets and route maps take place in the morning at the Pro Loco office, located at Via Maestra 38 in Battifollo.
Battifollo is located in the Province of Cuneo, in the Mongia Valley, at an altitude of over 800 meters. It can be reached by car via the provincial roads climbing from the Tanaro Valley and the Ceva area; as there is no train station, the most practical way to arrive is by car.
Wear comfortable walking shoes: the route is approximately 7.4 km long on hilly roads and trails. In case of bad weather, the event will be postponed to a later date, so it is advisable to check for updates on the Pro Loco channels before setting off.
